This article attempts to describe the continued fraction expansion of ÖD viewed as a Laurent series x-1. As the behavior of the continued fraction expansion of ÖD is related to the solvability of the polynomial Pell’s equation p2-Dq2=1  where D=f2+2g  is monic quadratic polynomial with deg g<deg f  and the solutions p, q  must be integer polynomials. It gives a non-trivial solution if and only if the continued fraction expansion of ÖD  is periodic.

Let p be a prime number ≥ 5, and n a positive integer > 1. This note is concerned with the diophantine equation x4 − y4 = nzp. We prove that, under certain conditions on n, this equation has no non-trivial solution in Z if p ≥ C(n), where C(n) is an effective constant.

The present investigation deals with global instability of a generaln-dimensional system of ordinary differential equations with quadratic right-hand sides. The global instability of the zero solution in a given cone is proved by Chetaev's method, assuming that the matrix of linear terms has a simple positive eigenvalue and the remaining eigenvalues have negative real parts. The sufficient conditions for global instability obtained are formulated by inequalities involving norms and eigenvalues of auxiliary matrices. In the proof, a result is used on the positivity of a general third-degree polynomial in two variables to estimate the sign of the full derivative of an appropriate function in a cone.

This paper presents the optimality of decay estimate of solutions to the initial value problem of 1D Schrödinger equations containing a long-range dissipative nonlinearity, i.e., λ | u | 2 u. Our aim is to obtain the two results. One asserts that, if the L 2 -norm of a global solution, with an initial datum in the weighted Sobolev space, decays at the rate more rapid than ( log t ) − 1 / 2 , then it must be a trivial solution. The other asserts that there exists a solution decaying just at the rate of ( log t ) − 1 / 2 in L 2 .

Following the notation and the definitions in [1], let L(K) be the Chevalley group of type L over a field K, W the Weyl group of L and h the Coxeter number, i.e., the order of Coxeter elements of W. In a letter to the author, John McKay asked the following question: If h + 1 is a prime, is there an element of order h + 1 in L(C)? In this note we give an affirmative answer to this question by constructing an element of order h + 1 (prime or otherwise) in the subgroup Lz = 〈xτ(1)|r ∈ Φ〉 of L(K), for any K.Our problem has an immediate solution when L = An. In this case h = n + 1 and the (n + l) × (n + l) matrixhas order 2(h + 1) in SLn+1(K). This seemingly trivial solution turns out to be a prototype of general solutions in the following sense.

In this paper a (1+1)-dimension equation of motion for φ4-theory is considered for the case of simultaneously taking into a account of the processes of dissipation and violation the Lorentz-invariance. A topological non-trivial solution of one-kink type for this equation is constructed in an analytical form. To this end, the modified direct Hirota method for solving the nonlinear partial derivatives equations was used. A modification of the method lead to special conditions on the parameters of the model and the solution.

The paper deals with nonlinear differential systems with random parameters in a general form. A new method for construction of the Lyapunov functions is proposed and is used to obtain sufficient conditions forL2-stability of the trivial solution of the considered systems.

In this paper, we establish some criteria for the stability of trivial solution of population growth models with impulsive perturbations. The working tools are based on the theory of generalized ordinary differential equations. Here, the conditions concerning the functions are more general than the classical ones.
