Computer simulation of electromechanical devices by exercising a suitable mathematical model has advantages in studying the effects of parameter changes. As a specific example, an electromechan ical relay has been chosen for simulation in this investigation. A differential equation model of the relay 1 is developed and simulated on an IBM 1130/2250 graphics terminal using the 1130 Continuous System Modeling Program (CSMP). An optical displacement measuring system was used to measure the armature travel as a function of time while the relay was functioning. These mea sured characteristics were compared with the analogous characteristics of the simulated relay to evaluate the validity and accuracy of the mathematical model. It is concluded that the differential equation model is an adequate appro ximation provided the lumped parameters of the magnetic circuit are appropriately chosen. The influence on the dynamic response of the relay as various relay parameters are changed can easily be predicted from the simulated model in this study.

Complex System Modeling, Simulation and Optimization Language (CoSMSOL) is problem-oriented and designed to run on multi-core computers. This paper provides the system environment of CoSMSOL and proposes the modeling methods of complex system, language text specification, function library, algorithm library, parallel simulation algorithms and intelligent optimization algorithms which support continuous system, discrete system and agent systems. Also, we developed a simulation language compiler of CoSMSOL, which is employed in two case studies generating a multi-entity war gaming system and an aerodynamic spacecraft model. The two cases illustrate main functions and implementation processes of CoSMSOL. The results validate that CoSMSOL is useful to model agent-based system and aerospace system.

Under controlled conditions, competition experiments were carried out with (a) spring barley and (b) C. album; this experiment was also simulated with a computer programme written in CSMP (Continuous System Modeling Program) on the basis of a model. When (b) was sown 7 days earlier, it could not compete with (a), but when this period was 21 and 31 days, (a) could no longer compete with (b). This result was hardly influenced by the applied densities of (b). Correspondence between the simulated and observed yields was rather poor initially, but could be considerably improved by correcting the model with the length factor. For this, the observed difference in length growth between the 2 spp. was included in the model. Based on the simulation results it could be concluded that light interception is probably the most important competition factor between the 2 spp. Simulating a series of 7, 21 and 31 days earlier germination for (b) showed that the critical period in which (b) can just maintain itself in a mixture with (a) is c. 15 days. Attention is called to the fact that the result of a competition experiment carried out under controlled conditions in a climate room cannot be used without comment for predicting a value under field conditions. A new approach to the study of domestic wastewater equalization basins is presented. The proposed methodology is based on the continuous simulation of the process using CSMP/360 (continuous system modeling program) simulation language. Different operating conditions can readily be simulated by the model EQUIL during a single computer run. This feature permits the construction of various response curves from which the volume of the equalization basin can be determined so as to meet the specified effluent variations. Two examples illustrate the use of the model for design purposes.

The 1130 Continuous System Modeling Program (1130 CSMP) with interactive computer graphics on the IBM 1130 digital computer has been in use at The Boeing Company, Huntsville, Alabama, since the middle of March, 1969. CSMP was introduced through a small research study to define the graphics requirements for Boeing Huntsville. By June 1, 1969, approximately 250 hours of CSMP utiliza tion had been logged on the 1130. As a result of this initial usage by various engineering disciplines, many new requirements have been identified for CSMP. The purpose of this paper is to present those modifications which have already been made to CSMP as a result of these require ments. Also noted in this paper are additional requirements which users feel should be met by further modifications of CSMP.
