AbstractMuch of the work in design research focusses on the development of methods and tools to support engineering designers. Many of these tools are nowadays implemented in software. Due to the strongly growing use of computers and smart devices in the last two decades, the expectations of users increased dramatically. In particular users expect good usability, for example little effort for learning to apply the software. Therefore, the usability evaluation of design software tools is crucial. A software tool with bad usability will not be used in industrial practice. Recommendations for usability evaluation of software often stem from the field of Human Computer Interaction. The aim of this paper is to tailor these general approaches to the specific needs of engineering design. In addition, we propose a method to analyse the results of the evaluation and to derive suggestions for improving the design software tool. We apply the usability evaluation method on a use case - the KoMBi software tool for bio-inspired design. The case study provides additional insights with regards to problem, causes and improvement categories.

The paper outlines challenges in improving wind turbine availability to reduce the cost of offshore wind energy. It reports the development of a design software tool for wind turbine gearboxes. It facilitates efficient conceptual designs of wind turbine gearboxes with combinations of epicyclic and parallel gear trains. Field loading conditions are obtained by analysing SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) data to support fatigue damage estimation based on Miner’s rule. Results show that considerable overloading conditions are present which would result in significant fatigue damages to the gearbox.

AbstractWind power plays a crucial role in supplying cities with renewable energy. Combined with short transport routes, it is essential to establish site-specific small wind turbines in the urban environment. An increasing interest in small, decentralized, vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWT) can be observed here. However, concepts with low visual and auditory effects and economic efficiencies are largely limited. The project part described in this paper enables a specially developed design software tool of rotor geometries optimized for such boundary conditions. By using fiber-reinforced structures in combination with selective laser sintering, it is theoretically possible to economically produce even the smallest quantities of these geometries for a typical service life of wind turbines. The results presented and discussed in this work can serve as a basis for a subsequent feasibility study.

Nowadays, when designing and operating electric power systems, special attention is paid to predicting emergency situations and minimizing losses in case they occur. The most common method of overvoltage investigations is the use of simulation models in specialized application packages, which imposes additional qualification requirements on the electrical engineer.The authors propose modeling technologies and a software tool for modeling and research of overvoltages that occur in 6–10 kV distribution networks at single-phase ground faults, including the method of visual design of the distribution network through the use of information technology and automated generation of mathematical model for its further study to analyze overvoltages.
