The study of urban development and regeneration of residential areas in the cities are mainly focused on the separate infrastructural systems and less how networks of infrastructural systems and their elements, as nodal places, interact with the existing living environment and its urban tissue. The central goal of the paper is to examine contemporary residential areas of low liveability with nodal places of logistics and services infrastructural networks, with an eye on existing urban policies and application of transdisciplinary concept of stigmergy in contemporary urban environment. Research objectives: (a) conceptualisation of stigmergic process in urban planning; (b) overview of socialist and post-socialist urban policies for residential areas; (c) stigmergic behaviour in the development of nodal places in residential areas. Methodology: Use of Earth Time Observation Systems for identification of urban changes of nodal places under the stigmergic behaviour in the case study residential area in post-socialist city in Ukraine; contextualization of the case study with the categories: Ideology, Institutional level, Politics, Economics, Mobile Infrastructures. Discussion and conclusion: (a) as concept, stigmergic behaviours are efficient, but work as a self-organization form; (b) urban policies should, under the stigmergic behaviours, contextualize changes, continue or prevent the process.

The diversification strategy is one of the most preferred by companies that searchfor the sustainable growth of their sales and profits in markets where products appear, grow indemand and become mature in a progressively faster way. This process is strongly perceived in thepackaging product market, as packaging are means of product promotion, brand image buildingand product quality protection, currently more and more important for consumer products. This research aims to verify if the diversifying strategy is a suitable option for companies ofsuch segment. The verification is performed through a case study covering the diversificationsolution of Impacta S/A, traditional supplier of aluminum collapsible tubes in Brazil and LatinAmerica that added to its portfolio plastic tubes and aluminum monoblock aerosol cans. Theconclusion of this study is that such diversification reached its goals of generating sustainablegrowth, reduce business risk, obtain solid “Market Share” in Brazil for all its products, adequatelyre-position the company in the market and surpass the results achieved by its competitors inthe country. It was also possible to assess the perspective of continuity of the current strategyas a way to increase sales by 85% in US dollars in the next five years, confirming the goodquality of the company managers’ strategic choice. As this conclusion is in part limited by the fact that the study focused on a single case, asuggestion should be left recommending the analysis of other diversification cases of companiesin the packaging segments.

Purpose This study aims to investigate growth stage of an entrepreneurial venture born within Thai university and also to explore the future growth strategy which is formulated by the departmental team and at the same time is influenced by the school’s administrators. Design/methodology/approach Single case study approach was used to explore the growth of dental school’s internal venture aimed to produce low-cost pharmaceutical supplies. The interview data were matched with relevant entrepreneurship literatures to build theory from case study. Findings There is a clash in terms of growth strategy preferred by the parental organization and department-level team who found the venture. The dental school’s administrators expect their internal venture to be fully commercialized as spin-off according to typical academic entrepreneurship scheme. Differently, the entrepreneurial team prefers keeping the departmental venture inside to serve its socially entrepreneurial motivation with modest growth. Originality/value The case evidence implies different schools of thought that could influence the growth of university-based entrepreneurial venture. The university’s entrepreneurial development scheme thus is to incorporate such differences to move its departmental venture forward for sustainable growth.

Abstract. This paper examines the possibility of impression evaluation based on gaze analysis of subjects and deep learning, using an example of evaluating street attractiveness in densely built-up wooden residential areas. Firstly, the relationship between the subjects' gazing tendency and their evaluation of street image attractiveness is analysed by measuring the subjects' gaze with an eye tracker. Next, we construct a model that can estimate an attractiveness evaluation result using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), combined with the method of gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) - these in in visualizing which street components can contribute to evaluating attractiveness. Finally, we discuss the similarity between the subjects' gaze tendencies and activation heatmaps created by Grad-CAM.

The impact of the last global economic crisis (2008) on the European economy put a strain on higher education (HE), yet it also pushed the sector towards intensive reforms and improvements. This paper focuses on the “Strategy for the Development of Higher Education in the Republic of Bulgaria 2014-2020”. With a case study methodology, we explore the strategic endeavours of the Bulgarian government to comply with the European directions and to secure sustainable growth for the HE sector. Our research question is ‘How capable is the Bulgarian HE Strategy to overcome the economic and systemic restraints of Bulgarian higher education?’. Because the development of strategies for HE within the EU is highly contextual, a single qualitative case study was chosen as the research approach. HE institutions are not ivory towers, but subjects to a variety of external and internal forces. Within the EU, this is obviated by the fact that Universities obtain their funds from institutions such as governments, students and their families, donors, as well as EU-level programmes. Therefore, to explore how these pressures interact to affect strategic action on national level, the case method is well suited as it enabled us to study the phenomena thoroughly and deeply. The paper suggests the actions proposed within the Strategy have the potential to overcome the delay, the regional isolation and the negative impact of the economic crisis on the country. Nevertheless, the key elements on which the success or failure of this Strategy hinges are the control mechanisms and the approach to implementation. Shortcomings in these two aspects of strategic actions in HE seem to mark the difference between gaining long-term benefits and merely saving face in front of international institutions.
