Towards Industry 4.0 — Current Challenges in Information Systems

Today’s technology minimizes human errors and enables the implementation of applications that will enable electronic devices to work flawlessly as much as possible. Both socially and technically, in each sector with all levels, the manager must make decisions based on his/her responsibility and interest. In these environments, making the right decision, unprotected or minimal damage to the risks, depends on the personal ability of the decision-maker as well as the information that comes with it. The concept of Industry 4.0, which has emerged in parallel with technological developments, includes the transformation of production and service activities into modern automation systems in social areas and the use of new methods in data exchange. In this context, the internet of the objects, the internet of services and cyber-physical systems constitute the basic structures of the new formation. In this study, the use of these technologies in the areas where social sciences operate in the fields of which are the components of the technological developments that emerged as Industry 4.0 are discussed in the topics of Autonomous Robots, Big Data, Simulation, System Integration, Cyber Security, Cloud Computing, 3D Printers, Enhanced and Virtual Reality. Planning, analysis, design, coding and implementation stages of many technologies produced and implemented by Management Information Systems for social sciences with the reason of the emergence of Industry 4.0, innovation, flexibility and efficiency approach will be explained in this study. Additionally, this paper examines the effect of the industrial transformation in Turkey. Keywords: Industry 4.0, internet of things, management information systems, information technologies

The visions of what constitutes the Industry 4.0 is an industry based on gains in efficiency and productivity enhancements supported by integrated, smart information systems. This has caused information systems strategic misalignment that present a severe barrier to National and organizational aspirations. This paper studies the readiness of manufacturing companies for the Industry 4.0, by using a case study of Chinese multinational enterprise in the aluminum production sector. The research design follows a rigorous grounded theory approach, which consisted of 41 semi-structured interviews in 7 different company branches. Based on this case study, the paper proposes an IS strategic misalignment model that identifies three levels of misalignment that need to be resolved before the vision of the smart industry can be realized. Six main categories of causes and five main categories of consequences of IS strategic misalignment are presented. This study contributes to the IS alignment literature and provides important implications for the achievement of Industry 4.0 in practice.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the value creation mechanisms of open-standard inter-organizational information system (OSIOS), which is a key technology to achieve Industry 4.0. Specifically, this study investigates how the internal assimilation and external diffusion of OSIOS help manufactures facilitate process adaptability and alignment in supply chain network. Design/methodology/approach A survey instrument was designed and administrated to collect data for this research. Using three-stage least squares estimation, the authors empirically tested a number of hypothesized relationships based on a sample of 308 manufacturing firms in China. Findings The results of the study show that OSIOS can perform as value creation mechanisms to enable process adaptability and alignment. In addition, the impact of OSIOS internal assimilation is inversely U-shaped where the positive effect on process adaptability will become negative after an extremum point is reached. Originality/value This study contributes to the existing literature by providing insights on how OSIOS can improve supply chain integration and thus promote the achievement of industry 4.0. By revealing a U-shaped relationship between OSIOS assimilation and process adaptability, this study fills previous research gap by advancing the understanding on the value creation mechanisms of information systems deployment.

The article examines the role and importance of international information standards in the digital economy. The importance of standards in building a single digital space as a key element of the digital economy is shown. Particular attention is paid to international standards of integration on the level of ontology, semantics and languages of interaction of information systems. The structure of the standards of the European initiative in the digital economy — “Industry 4.0”, as well as the development of the digital economy in the directions: Digital Corporation and Digital Industry. The possible directions of the development and application of information standards within the digital economy are defined.

The 25th issue of CSIMQ presents four articles that investigate novel enablers for information systems development. Three of the selected articles focus on conceptual modeling methods, whereas the fourth one investigates the readiness of SMEs for Industry 4.0 adoption. Model-driven engineering was both tailored (on method level) and applied in two of the papers, taking a Design Science approach to develop proofs-of-concept for the notion of “technology-specific modeling”, a particular flavor of domain-specific modeling – more precisely, technology-specific modeling languages reflect the specificity of a technological ecosystem or pattern (e. g. REST APIs, MVC Web development frameworks). The third paper's contribution may also be seen as a modeling method, although it is not framed as such – it focuses on a design viewpoint and its theoretical applicability in business scenarios. This method proposes a chemistry-inspired technique for optimizing enterprise collaboration patterns based on their KPI effects. Finally, the last paper takes a systematic literature review approach to investigate Industry 4.0 adoption at SME level through the lens of a modified version of the IMPULS assessment model.
