In 1958–1959, Khrushchev launched his program for the “full-scale construction of communism.” Not coincidentally, in the same time period, China’s Mao launched his disastrous “Great Leap Forward,” Yugoslavia generalized its program of “workers’ self-management” as a blueprint for the communist world moving forward, while North Korea presented the late-Stalinist policy of monolithic, terroristic control as the only true path to communism.

A state-of-the-art small-scale solid state forge welding machine has been fabricated for checking weldability by Shielded Active Gas Forge Welding (SAG-FW) of tubular products applicable predominantly for, but not limited to offshore Industries. Effective, fast and inexpensive welding and testing of joints make this small-scale method suitable for evaluating weldability of a material before starting regular qualification and fabrication in a full-scale welding machine normally located in spool base or offshore. The small-scale machine provides a complete package for pre-qualification studies, including assessment of welding conditions, material flow behavior, heat treatment options. However, there are considerable challenges relating to application of international standards of testing as well as interpretation and use of results in the context of large-scale welding. In this paper results from small-scale welding and weld characterization of an API 5L X65 quality are presented. First, a detailed test plan for analyzing the weld is outlined. This procedure is subsequently applied for checking the welds to be produced in the full-scale machine. Short-comings in using the small-scale process as well as the possible remedies are discussed in detail.

A new floating wind turbine platform design called VolturnUS developed by the University of Maine uses innovations in materials, construction, and deployment technologies such as a concrete semisubmersible hull and a composite tower to reduce the costs of offshore wind. These novel characteristics require research and development prior to full-scale construction. This paper presents a unique offshore model testing effort aimed at derisking full-scale commercial projects by providing scaled global motion data, allowing for testing of materials representative of the full-scale system, and demonstrating full-scale construction and deployment methods. A 1:8-scale model of a 6 MW semisubmersible floating wind turbine was deployed offshore Castine, ME, in June 2013. The model includes a fully operational commercial 20 kW wind turbine and was the first grid-connected offshore wind turbine in the U.S. The testing effort includes careful selection of the offshore test site, the commercial wind turbine that produces the correct aerodynamic thrust given the wind conditions at the test site, scaling methods, model design, and construction. A suitable test site was identified that produced scaled design load cases (DLCs) prescribed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Guide for Building and Classing Floating Offshore Wind Turbines. A turbine with a small rotor diameter was selected because it produces the correct thrust load given the wind conditions at the test site. Some representative data from the test are provided in this paper. Model test data are compared directly to full-scale design predictions made using coupled aeroelastic/hydrodynamic software. Scaled VolturnUS performance data during DLCs show excellent agreement with full-scale predictive models. Model test data are also compared directly without scaling against a numerical representation of the 1:8-scale physical model for the purposes of numerical code validation. The numerical model results compare favorably with data collected from the physical model.

Extrusion-based elastomer seals are used in many applications, such as the seal in a variable bore ram valve used in offshore oil and gas drilling. Performing full-scale closing pressure experiments of such valves to characterize the seal performance and material failure of elastomer, especially under various temperature conditions, are quite expensive and time consuming. Conversely, simple coupon tests to characterize the elastomer mechanical properties and failure do not capture the complex deformation associated with the extrusion and subsequent sealing type that these materials undergo in the valves. In view of this, a simple subscale experimental test method capable of simulating the extrusion and sealing type deformation is developed. The extrusion and sealing deformation are realized by bonding the rectangular elastomer sample to metal pieces on top and bottom surfaces, and then compressing the sample in the vertical direction, while the deformation of the three lateral surfaces is kept constrained. As a result, sample deforms and extrudes out of the front surface, eventually forming the seal against a flat rigid metal plate placed at an appropriate distance. Simple scaling rules to determine the appropriate sample size and initial sealing gap, equivalent to the full-scale valve in terms of similar strain conditions, are derived and then verified using finite element analysis (FEA). Finally, the experimental test method is demonstrated by characterizing the contact pressure of nitrile (NBR) samples under different operating temperatures, ranging from 21 °C to 160 °C using pressure-sensitive film sensor.
