American geopolitical power partly relies on foreign public support for its leadership. Pundits worry that this support is evaporating now that the United States—which claims to be the world’s beacon of democracy—has itself experienced democratic back- sliding. I provide the first natural experimental test of this hypothesis by exploiting that the January 6 insurrection of the US Capitol unexpectedly occurred while Gallup was conducting nationally-representative surveys in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Romania, and Vietnam. Because Gallup uses random digit dialing I can identify the effect by comparing US leadership approval among respondents that were interviewed just before, and just after, January 6, 2021. I find that the insurrection had no effect on US approval. If even a violent attempt to overturn a free and fair election does not affect US approval abroad it is unlikely that any other domestic anti-democratic event will.

The main objective of this chapter is the experimental validation of active and reactive power control at the connection point for a three-phase grid connected inverter. It gives an overview on the adopted vector control strategy, regulation of the angle of orientation of the blades (pitch control), synchronization grid side converter to the power network using phase closed loop (PLL). Once the experimental test bench is described, the authors devote a first part to the design of the block circuit diagram of the experimental platform and the control strategy implemented in the DSPace DS1104, and they suggest some steps to associate the inverter to the electrical network. Subsequently, they discuss the experimental results validating the proposed power control. The purpose of this experimental results is the DSPACE real-time implementation of PQ control using three-phase inverter and development of a startup algorithm of the experimental test bench.

Summary Produced water is a major challenge in the oil and gas industry, especially with the aging of oil fields. Proper treatment of produced water is important in reducing the environmental footprint of oil and gas production. On offshore platforms, hydrocyclones are commonly used for produced-water treatment. However, maintaining the efficiency of hydrocyclones subjected to plant disturbances is a difficult task owing to their compact nature. This paper describes a new experimental test rig built at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology for testing industrial-scale hydrocyclones. The test setup can emulate first-stage separation and create plant disturbances, such as changes in flow rate, oil concentration, and oil droplet distribution at the inlet of the hydrocyclones. Also, the setup is capable of testing different control algorithms, which helps to maintain the efficiency of hydrocyclones in the presence of such disturbances. The test rig is equipped with various instruments that can monitor such parameters as pressure, flow, temperature, and oil concentration. A typical pressure drop ratio (PDR) control scheme for hydrocyclones is tested in the test rig, which can control the disturbances in the inflow rate. The PDR control scheme does not detect disturbances in the inlet oil concentration and changes in droplet distribution, and these scenarios are shown experimentally in this paper.

This paper emphasizes on the required guidelines for establishing a geotechnical finite-element model. The steps that must be taken to construct such a model are explained in a flowchart, and the methodology described therein is illustrated by building a model using commercially available finite-element software. Well-documented experimental test data are used to validate the model results. The effects of the geometry plotting, meshing techniques, and boundary locations are assessed by comparing the model results with the experimental results. To date, various geotechnical constitutive models have been proposed to describe various aspects of actual soil behavior in detail, and the advantages and limitations of five such models are discussed. The model results are subjected to an assessment check. The geotechnical modeler can be decided based on the knowledge base that constitutive models will use as the case.
