Readiness of Entrepreneurs Towards Group Performance Development of OTOP Product: A Case Study in Northeastern Thailand

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of “multiplex” (multiple overlapping) networks and leadership on group performance in a higher education setting. Design/methodology/approach Using a combination of social network analysis and interviews, the authors employ a case study approach to map the connections between academic group members. This paper analyses the relationship between this mapping and academic performance. Findings The authors identified two dimensions which influence group effectiveness: multiplex networks and distributed–coordinated leadership. Where networks are built across tasks, inter-relationships develop that lead to greater group performance. Practical implications Where group members create a dense hive of interconnectivity and are active across all group tasks, and also informally, this increases the opportunity for knowledge sharing. When this is similarly experienced by a majority of group members, there is positive reinforcement, resulting in greater group effectiveness. Originality/value This paper highlights the importance of the richness of formal ties in knowledge-intensive settings. This paper is the first to differentiate between formal connections between colleagues related to different tasks within their role. This suggests that dense configurations of informal ties are insufficient; they must be coupled with strong ties around formal activity and demonstrative leadership.

This article reports a qualitative case study about the implementation of a translanguaging strategy with EFL learners belonging to the Language Learning Support programs at a private university, who struggled when speaking in English. In order to address this problem, this strategy aim to help participants to reflect and self-direct their oral performance development. Multimodal tools were used for learners to undertake a specific course of action to cope with their speaking difficulties. Data gathered from tutor's journals, student's e-portfolio and interviews, showed how confidence and self-regulation were fostered after including student's mother tongue and ICT tools. These findings suggest a need to expand this implementation with learners of different proficiency levels who also find it difficult to verbally express their ideas. Moreover, it takes a look at the use of the mother tongue as an advantage rather than as an obstacle to learning a foreign language.

The use of ontologies to represent CSCL scenarios have been investigated by several researchers in the literature. Despite of important contributions of such works, we have observed the lack of studies that consider the aspects related to students’ affect (e.g., personality trait) to represent such scenarios. Thus, this paper aims at extending the ontological structure of Affective Collaborative Learning (ACL) role to represent the relation between Stable/Unstable Extroverted personality traits and Full Participant role defined by the Distributed Cognition learning theory. Based on such ontological structure we create three CSCL scenarios to deal with lack of students’ reflection. In order to evaluate the impact of low and high impulsivity characteristics on such scenarios, we developed a case study with children aged between 09-10 to verify three alternative hypotheses. The results indicate that low impulsivity in homogeneous groups, where students performed the ACL role Extroverted Stable Full Participant, does not influence the group performance. Based on such ontological structure we hope to contribute with solutions to create more effective and personalized CSCL scenarios.

This case study of a dual career development environment (DCDE) was informed by the holistic ecological approach (HEA) and aimed at (a) providing a holistic description of a DCDE at university level in Sweden and (b) investigating the perceived factors influencing the environment’s effectiveness in facilitating the development of student-athletes. The authors blended in situ observations, interviews, and document analysis to explore the case, and HEA-informed working models were transformed into empirical models summarizing the case. Findings show a well-coordinated DCDE with the key role of coaches in daily dual career support and how efforts were integrated through a dual career-support team sharing a philosophy of facilitating healthy performance development and life balance, with a whole-person and empowerment approach. This study adds to the literature by identifying features of a successful DCDE, and insights from the case can be useful for practitioners in their quest to optimize their DCDEs and support.

Chili is a spice typically grown globally, including in Thailand, for either domestic consumption or commercial purposes. If considered in terms of economic perspectives, growing chili can help farmers earn some income as well as becoming a prosperous business for retailers. Moreover, chili is a major ingredient for the processed food and medicine industries, with profits gained by exporting it overseas. Thailand has a 5.44 per cent market share of chili worldwide with its chili products exported overseas, namely, green and red chili, dried chili and ground chili, as well as chili dips for chicken, chili paste and curry paste. These exports are expected to keep increasing to those who favor Thai food in foreign countries (Senadee, Pomrit, & Chaiyaporn, 2018). In Thailand, growing and cultivating chili ranks fifth in the world, as the plant is grown in a total land area of 575,787.5 Rai (FAO, 2016), which yields 332,888 tons of fresh chili. Northeastern Thailand is an area where most chili is grown, accounting for about 37 per cent. There, a total land area of 128,932 Rai yields 117,150 tons of fresh chili (DOAE, 2019) .
