Education for and Through sustainability: Toward Interdisciplinary Dialogue

There is a pressing need to extend our thinking about diplomacy beyond state-centric perspectives, as in the name of sovereignty and national interests, people on move are confronting virtual, symbolic and/or material walls and frames of policies inhibiting their free movement. My point of departure is to explore migrant activism and global politics through the transformation of diplomacy in a globalised world. Developing an interdisciplinary dialogue between new diplomacy and sociology, I evidence the emergence of global sociopolitical formations created through civic bi-nationality organisations. Focusing on the agent in interaction with structures, I present a theoretical framework and strategy for analysing the practices of migrant diplomacies as an expression of contemporary politics. A case study from North America regarding returned families in Mexico City provides evidence of how these alternative diplomacies are operating.

Service work is rapidly evolving as a result of technological innovations, changing employment norms, and a variety of environmental challenges. Yet, the scope of service work scholarship appears to be restricted to traditional frontline employees occupying boundary-spanning positions in formal private-sector service organizations. Given the “perfect storm” of multiple disruptions, we believe that the time is ripe for service scholars to reexamine how service work is being (and will be) enacted in a changing world. In this editorial, we propose an expansion of the “service worker” construct, recommend a deeper exploration of the experiences of service workers, and call to situate these experiences within an evolving service work ecosystem. Our aim is to spark interdisciplinary dialogue related to service work in order to foster service scholarship and practice that are responsive to the changing world.

In this review article, we combine two approaches to the study of second language (L2) fluency: cognitive fluency and utterance fluency. The former concentrates on cognitive processing and its limitations, whereas the latter involves analyzing fluency-related features from speech samples. Despite theoretical links, the research traditions associated with the approaches have been relatively separate. In addition to providing an overview of the two approaches, the similarities and differences between them are illustrated with results related to one aspect of (dis)fluency, repetitions. Bringing together results related to cognitive and utterance fluency highlights the usefulness of combining different viewpoints in L2 fluency research and demonstrates the need for further interdisciplinary dialogue to gain a comprehensive picture of L2 fluency. Together, the results of studies emphasizing different aspects of L2 fluency also have important implications for L2 fluency assessment.

This work calls on healthcare institutions and organizations to move toward inclusive recognition and representation of healthcare practitioners whose credibility is established both inside and outside of professional licensure mechanisms. Despite professional licensure’s advantages, this credentialing mechanism has in many cases served to reinforce unjust sociocultural power relations in relation to ethnicity and race, class and gender. To foster health equity and the delivery of culturally-responsive care, it is essential that mechanisms other than licensure be recognized as legitimate pathways for community accountability, safety and quality assurance. Such mechanisms include certification with non-statutory occupational bodies, as well as community-based recognition pathways such as those engaged for Community Health Workers (including Promotores de Salud) and Indigenous healing practitioners. Implementation of this vision will require interdisciplinary dialogue and reconciliation, constructive collaboration, and shared decision making between healthcare institutions and organizations, practitioners and the communities they serve.

Purpose This paper reflects on the Sustainability Research Symposium (SRS), a long-term student-led initiative (seven years) at McGill University in Montréal, Canada, that seeks to foster interdisciplinary dialogue among students and researchers by using the sustainability sciences as a bridge concept. The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of the SRS in fostering sustainability literacy. Design/methodology/approach Past participants of the SRS were invited to complete a survey to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of the symposia from a participants’ perspective. A mix of descriptive statistics and axial and thematic coding were used to analyze survey responses (n = 56). This study links theory and practice to explore the outcomes of symposia as tools for students to engage with sustainability research in university campuses. Findings Survey findings indicated that participants are from multiple disciplinary backgrounds and that they are often interested in sustainability research without being identified as sustainability researchers. Overall, the survey findings suggested that student-organized symposia can be effective mechanisms to enhance exposure to interdisciplinary research and to integrate sustainability sciences outside the classroom. Practical implications Despite being a one-day event, the survey findings suggest that symposia can offer an “initiation” toward interdisciplinary dialogue and around sustainability research that can have lasting impacts beyond the time frame of the event. Originality/value Although research symposia are widespread in university campuses, there is little published information on the effectiveness of student-organized symposia as vectors for sustainability literacy. This original contribution presents a case study of the effectiveness of an annual symposium at one Canadian university, organized by students from the Faculties of Science, Arts and Management.

Mysticism and poetry make up an inseparable pairing and, in these times of absence, they reveal the deep desire of man to go beyond the immediate, the existential, the superficial. The Argentine poet Hugo Mujica opens, from his poetic saying, a door towards the abyss and the desert, towards the limit of language and silence. We can glimpse in his poetry Heidegger’s legacy and, together with the philosopher, the Master Eckhart is also dragged from his going to God without god. From the interdisciplinary dialogue between philosophy, theology and poetry, we will approach to decipher this influence that transforms the saying of the poet-philosopher and updates his word in the desert and plunges us into the mystery of the unspeakable.
