Futures Analysis Methodologies are reviewed and assessed to determine the most appropriate methodology for assessing the future value of a current investment in a sustainable energy technology. Assessment criteria are defined and each method is evaluated against these criteria. The paper provides preliminary conclusions regarding which methodologies to pursue for the purpose of developing a model to predict the future value of a current energy/environmental technology.

BACKGROUND Accurately measuring and monitoring patient medication adherence is a global challenge due to the absence of “gold standard” methods for adherence measurement. Recent attentions have turned towards the adoption of technologies for medication adherence monitoring as they provide the opportunity for continuous tracking of individual medication adherence behavior. Yet, current medication adherence monitoring technologies vary by their technical features and methods of adherence data capture, leading to differences in their respective advantages and limitations. Overall, there is a lack of appropriate criteria to guide the assessment of medication adherence monitoring technologies for optimal adoption and utilization. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to provide a concise overview and summary of current medication adherence monitoring technologies and propose a set of technology assessment criteria to aid in the development and adoption of these technologies. METHODS A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and ProQuest Technology Collection (January 2010-June 2021) using the combination of keywords "medication adherence," "measurement technology," and "monitoring technology". The selection focused on studies related to medication adherence monitoring technology and its development and use. The technological features, methods of adherence data capture, and potential advantages and limitations of identified technology applications were extracted. Common, recurring elements were synthesized as potential technology assessment criteria. RESULTS Among 3865 articles retrieved, 98 remained for final review, which reported a variety of technology applications for monitoring medication adherence, including electronic pill bottles/boxes, ingestible sensors, electronic medication management systems, blister pack technology, patient self-report technology, video-based technology, and motion-sensor technology. The most commonly reported technologies included electronic pill bottles, electronic pillboxes, and ingestible sensors. Twenty-eight technology assessment criteria were identified and organized into five categories: Development Information, Technology Features, Medication Adherence Data Collection & Management, Feasibility & Implementation, and Acceptability and Usability. CONCLUSIONS This study summarized the technical features, data capture methods, and various advantages and limitations of medication adherence monitoring technology reported in the literature and proposed criteria for assessing medication adherence monitoring technologies. This collection of assessment criteria may be a useful tool to guide the development and selection of relevant technology, facilitating the optimal adoption and effective use of technology to improve medication adherence outcomes. Future studies are suggested to further validate the medication adherence monitoring technology assessment criteria and construct an appropriate technology evaluation framework.

Abstract Objective: For assessing cost-effectiveness, Health Technology Assessment (HTA) organisations may use primary economic evaluations (P-HEs) or Systematic Reviews of Health Economic evaluations (SR-HEs). The latter pose the question whether the results from existing P-HEs are transferable across decision contexts (e.g. jurisdictions). A particularly pertinent issue is the high variability of costs and resource needs across jurisdictions. Our objective was to review the methods documents of HTA organisations and compare their recommendations on considering transferability in SR-HE. Methods: We systematically hand searched the webpages of 158 HTA organisations for relevant methods documents from January to March 2019. Two independent reviewers performed searches and selected documents according to pre-defined criteria. One reviewer extracted data in standardised and piloted tables and a second reviewer checked them for accuracy. We synthesized data using tabulations and in a narrative way. Results: We identified 155 potentially relevant documents from 63 HTA organisations. Of these, 7 were included in the synthesis. The included organisations have different aims when preparing a SR-HE (e.g. to determine the need for conducting their own P-HE). The recommendations vary regarding the underlying terminology (e.g. transferability/generalisability), the assessment approaches (e.g. structure), the assessment criteria and the integration in the review process. Conclusion: Only few HTA organisations address the assessment of transferability in their methodological recommendations for SR-HEs. Transferability considerations are related to different purposes. The assessment concepts and criteria are heterogeneous. Developing standards to consider transferability in SR-HEs is desirable.

The digital revolution of the energy system promises a new sustainable energy future, but risks security and privacy. How to balance or at least compare these risks against other values like more sustainability is far from obvious and poses severe challenges for the orientation knowledge of technology assessment (TA). This paper explores the Capability Approach (CA) as a normative orientation for TA that allows addressing these challenges. We use two scenarios for the current digitalization in the energy sector as case studies.

Living cells naturally maintain a variety of metabolic reactions via energy conversion mechanisms that are coupled to proton transfer across cell membranes, thereby producing energy-rich compounds. Until now, researchers have been unable to maintain continuous biochemical reactions in artificially engineered cells, mainly due to the lack of mechanisms that generate energy-rich resources, such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH). If these metabolic activities in artificial cells are to be sustained, reliable energy transduction strategies must be realized. In this perspective, this article discusses the development of an artificially engineered cell containing a sustainable energy conversion process.
