This essay serves as a response to Cai and McKenna’s Letter to the Editor (2020) recently published in the Journal of Travel Research, which sought to initiate a discussion regarding the nature and future of research related to information technology and tourism (ITT). The authors argued that ITT is a subfield of information systems (IS) and ITT research is narrowly defined, self-referential, and focused on application, rather than building theory. In this essay, we challenge the authors’ basic assumptions as well as their supportive evidence. We argue that ITT, as an intersection between IT and tourism, is a well-developed, multidisciplinary field and has contributed substantially to tourism research and beyond. Furthermore, we offer a vision of future ITT research that aims to engage with much wider conversations about innovation, sustainability, well-being, quality of life, smart governance, and resilience, particularly in response to the unprecedented crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Palabras clave  Regeneración de barrios, carácter integral, gentrificación, centro, periferiaAbstractThis paper analyses the socioeconomic profile of the Integrated Urban Areas (ARI) determined by the Municipality of Madrid between 1992 and 2012. Throughout a rigorous chronological comparison among the census data of 1991, 2001 and 2011, it is possible to register the evolution of each ARI and its changes, as well as the motivation and consequences of these transformations. This research approach allows to evaluate the integration of the proposals, identify different geographic behaviours according to their location and time framework and define the relation between these interventions and processes of gentrification. The paper concludes with a critical reflection on the need to coordinate rehabilitation programmes and create evaluation tools for urban regeneration processes. In the 1970s, the fragile historical centre of the city of Perugia was a key area where the binomial of sustainable mobility and urban regeneration was developed and applied. At the turn of the xxi century, the low carbon automatic people-mover Minimetrò broadened that application from the city's historical centre to the outskirts, promoting the enhancement of several urban environments. This paper is the outcome of an investigation of original sources, field surveys and direct interviews, which addresses the Minimetrò as the backbone of a wide regeneration process which has had a considerable impact on the economic development of a peripheral area of the city which was previously devoid of any clear urban sense. The conclusion proposes some solutions to improve the nature of the Minimetrò as an experimental alternative means of transport.
