Agent-Based System for Context-Aware Human-Computer Interaction

Context-awareness is a maturing area within the field of ubiquitous computing. It is particularly relevant to the growing sub-field of mobile computing as a user’s context changes more rapidly when a user is mobile, and interacts with more devices and people in a greater number of locations. In this chapter, we present a definition of context and context-awareness and describe its importance to human-computer interaction and mobile computing. We describe some of the difficulties in building context-aware applications and the solutions that have arisen to address these. Despite these solutions, users have difficulties in using and adopting mobile context-aware applications. We discuss these difficulties and present a set of eight design guidelines that can aid application designers in producing more usable and useful mobile context-aware applications.

Context-aware user interface plays an important role in many human-computer Interaction tasks of location based services. Although spatial models for context-aware systems have been studied extensively, how to locate specific spatial information for users is still not well resolved, which is important in the mobile environment where location based services users are impeded by device limitations. Better context-aware human-computer interaction models of mobile location based services are needed not just to predict performance outcomes, such as whether people will be able to find the information needed to complete a human-computer interaction task, but to understand human processes that interact in spatial query, which will in turn inform the detailed design of better user interfaces in mobile location based services. In this study, a context-aware adaptive model for mobile location based services interface is proposed, which contains three major sections: purpose, adjustment, and adaptation. Based on this model we try to describe the process of user operation and interface adaptation clearly through the dynamic interaction between users and the interface. Then we show how the model applies users’ demands in a complicated environment and suggested the feasibility by the experimental results.

Purpose The increasing use of robotics within modern factories and workplaces not only sees us becoming more dependent on this technology but it also introduces innovative ways by which humans interact with complex systems. As agent-based systems become more integrated into work environments, the traditional human team becomes more integrated with agent-based automation and, in some cases, autonomous behaviours. This paper discusses these interactions in terms of team composition and how a human-agent collective can share goals via the delegation of authority between human and agent team members. Design/methodology/approach This paper highlights the increasing integration of robotics in everyday life and examines the nature of how new novel teams may be constructed with the use of intelligent systems and autonomous agents. Findings Areas of human factors and human-computer interaction are used to discuss the benefits and limitations of human-agent teams. Research limitations/implications There is little research in (human–robot) (H–R) teamwork, especially from a human factors perspective. Practical implications Advancing the author’s understanding of the H–R team (and associated intelligent agent systems) will assist in the integration of such systems in everyday practices. Social implications H–R teams hold a great deal of social and organisational issues that need further exploring. Only through understanding this context can advanced systems be fully realised. Originality/value This paper is multidisciplinary, drawing on areas of psychology, computer science, robotics and human–computer Interaction. Specific attention is given to an emerging field of autonomous software agents that are growing in use. This paper discusses the uniqueness of the human-agent teaming that results when human and agent members share a common goal within a team.

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) deals with the issue of how we can create context-aware, electronic environments which foster seamless human-computer interaction. Ambient Intelligence encompasses the fields of ubiquitous computing, artificially intelligent systems, and context awareness among others. This paper discusses context-awareness and examines how discoveries in this area will be key in propelling the development of true AmI environments. This will be done by examining the background and reasoning behind this particular strand of AmI research along with an overview of the technologies being explored alongside possible applications of context awareness in computing as well as technological and socio- ethical challenges in this field.

In this paper an approach of using contextual information for structuring and displaying menus on small devices will be discussed, based on the implementation of a game for mobile games. CitizenMOB is a location-based, multiplayer, never-ending society-driven strategic mobile game that has been developed in order to understand today's possibilities and challenges in the design of complex games for mobile phones. Integrating a context-aware navigation and adaptive menu structure is an attempt not only to reflect the effect of new contexts of use on human-computer-interaction, it is also meant to overcome usability problems that occur when limitations of small screens are combined with complex rules and massive options in the next generation of rich mobile applications.
