To solve the tool-making bottleneck, it is fundamental to integrate rapid manufacturing methodologies for rapid tooling, which reduces the lead-time to manufacture the tools while improving their quality. Rapid tooling (RT) is a progression of rapid prototyping (RP). RT is the art of producing tooling directly from CAD models of the part. RT technology plays a major role in increasing the pace of tooling development. This paper describes the role of RT according to the current market situation. An ample review of examples of rapid tooling indicates a new trend of tooling practice. This trend in manufacturing based on rapid prototyping and rapid tooling has already had a dynamic impact on the engineering environment.

Digital photoelasticity is an important segment of optical metrology for stress analysis by digital photographic images. Advances in digital image processing, data acquisition, standard recognition and data storage allow the utilization of computer-aided techniques in the automation and improvement of the digital photoelastic technique. The objective of this study is to develop new techniques using 3D rapid prototyping with transparent resins in digital photoelasticity. Some innovations are proposed (e.g., a tapered roller bearing built with 3D rapid prototyping with transparent resin and the final assembly with the specimens prototyped separately). A metrology study is carried out with the new techniques developed.

This paper discussed the working principle, classification, modeling process and technology features for rapid tooling based on rapid prototyping and investigated into the difference between rapid tooling with traditional modeling manufacture. Several typical rapid tooling technologies are compared and summarized from mould period, fabrication cost and production cycle. Some key problems that rapid tooling industry will face with are analyzed. The application of the rapid tooling based on rapid prototyping is prospected.

“Getting to market first” is extremely intensive pressure on the companies in this competitive business environment. The speed at which products are developed and released to market is tightly linked to profitability and market share. Hence, many companies are still in a desperate need of real Rapid Tooling (RT) technologies which can really help expedite their prototype tooling and pre -production tooling for injection molding. This paper describes how HT (Hybrid Tooling) process has been being successfully established and effectively applied with Metal filled SLS technologies.
