Two-dimensional (2D) planning on standard radiographs for total hip arthroplasty may not be sufficiently accurate to predict implant sizing or restore leg length and femoral offset, whereas 3D planning avoids magnification and projection errors. Furthermore, weightbearing measures are not available with computed tomography (CT) and leg length and offset are rarely checked postoperatively using any imaging modality. Navigation can usually achieve a surgical plan precisely, but the choice of that plan remains key, which is best guided by preoperative planning. The study objectives were therefore to (1) evaluate the accuracy of stem/cup size prediction using dedicated 3D planning software based on biplanar radiographic imaging under weightbearing and (2) compare the preplanned leg length and femoral offset with the postoperative result. This single-centre, single-surgeon prospective study consisted of a cohort of 33 patients operated on over 24 months. The routine clinical workflow consisted of preoperative biplanar weightbearing imaging, 3D surgical planning, navigated surgery to execute the plan, and postoperative biplanar imaging to verify the radiological outcomes in 3D weightbearing. 3D planning was performed with the dedicated hipEOS® planning software to determine stem and cup size and position, plus 3D anatomical and functional parameters, in particular variations in leg length and femoral offset. Component size planning accuracy was 94% (31/33) within one size for the femoral stem and 100% (33/33) within one size for the acetabular cup. There were no significant differences between planned versus implanted femoral stem size or planned versus measured changes in leg length or offset. Cup size did differ significantly, tending towards implanting one size larger when there was a difference. Biplanar radiographs plus hipEOS planning software showed good reliability for predicting implant size, leg length, and femoral offset and postoperatively provided a check on the navigated surgery. Compared to previous studies, the predictive results were better than 2D planning on conventional radiography and equal to 3D planning on CT images, with lower radiation dose, and in the weightbearing position.

Abstract Objectives To evaluate the precision of aligner (Invisalign®) treatment with the current material (SmartTrack®) in achieving expansion or contraction of the maxilla and occlusal contacts as simulated in the proprietary planning software (ClinCheck®, CC). Materials and methods Thirty patients thus treated were retrospectively evaluated. Four maxillary models were analyzed per patient: a pretreatment model, a scan-based CC model, a posttreatment clinical model, and a CC model reflecting the treatment outcome as initially simulated. Thirteen transverse parameters were measured on each model separately by two investigators. Occlusal contacts were also analyzed. Results The measuring method was validated by both investigators arriving at similar results for the effectiveness by which the simulated treatment goals had been clinically achieved. Significant differences (p < 0.05; Wilcoxon signed-rank test) were observed for transfer precision from the casts to the planning software and between the simulated and clinical outcomes. Intense occlusal contacts in the simulations materialized less common (≈ 2%) than ideal contacts (≈ 60%) in the clinical outcomes. Conclusions The effectiveness of achieving the simulated transverse goals was 45% and was generally not found to be better with SmartTrack® than with the previously used Ex30® material. Out of 100 simulated occlusal contacts, 40 will never materialize, and achieving around 60 will adequately ensure a clinically favorable contact pattern. Clinical relevance With the caveat that any overcorrection will to some extent reduce the precision, it seems perfectly possible to make deliberate use of overcorrection in current aligner therapies for transverse maxillary expansion or contraction.

Surgical robots for biopsy procedure require pre-operative planning of trajectories prior to be used for needle guiding procedures. Virtual Reality (VR) technologies allow to simulate robotic biopsy procedure and to generate accurate needle trajectories that avoid vital organs. The paper presents a serial robot which can be used for biopsy procedure and a needle trajectory planning software based on VR technologies. A virtual environment has been modelled and simulations for robotic-assisted biopsy of the prostate have been performed.

Die Planung von Montagesystemen wird durch die Einführung von cyber-physischen Modulen und neuen Formen der Zusammenarbeit von Mensch und Roboter zunehmend komplexer. Ontologien können Planungswissen bezüglich Beziehungen und Restriktionen formal abbilden. Mit der hier beschriebenen Sprachdomäne werden Ontologien für Montageplaner zugänglich und anwendbar. Die Planung kann auf diese Weise beschleunigt und flexibilisiert werden. &nbsp; The planning of assembly systems is becoming increasingly complex with the introduction of cyber-physical modules and new forms of human-robot cooperation. Ontologies can formally capture planning knowledge in terms of relationships and restrictions. The domain specific language described here makes ontologies accessible and usable for assembly planners. Thus, planning may be accelerated and designed more flexibly.

Summary A novel method of utilizing simulations of surge and swab induced by floating rig heave is presented in this paper. The intended applications are in well planning and follow-up of drilling and completion operations. We focus on rig heave during drill pipe connections when the rig's heave compensator cannot be engaged. The method consists of: (1) estimating a dynamic, well- and operation-specific, rig heave limit based on surge & swab simulations at different depths in a well and (2) clearly communicating the dynamic rig heave limit to the rig crew and onshore organization as a simple metric. We present cases where this novel methodology has been tested during the drilling and completion of two offshore wells in Norway, and we elaborate on the operators’ view of the method's advantages. We conclude that complementing the traditional fixed rig-specific heave limit with the dynamic one that is based on the properties of the actual well and the actual drilling/completion parameters offers an opportunity to improve management of risks related to breaching well pressure margins or damaging downhole equipment and to reduce costs through reduction of weather-related non-productive time. We show that the dynamic rig heave limit may differ significantly from well to well and also throughout the same well depending on the kind of operation in the well, depth in the well, well geometry and other parameters related to well and operation properties. Our conclusion is that care should be taken when generalizing a maximum allowed rig heave value as is the industry practice today. The benefits of utilizing dynamic well-specific rig heave limit should be assessed during well planning for any well drilled and completed from a floating rig. Well planning software existing today does not offer this functionality.
