This article discussed the problem that is commonly faced by project managers in selecting an appropriate software development model. A good number of models and the ongoing debate between the advocates of agile and traditional models make the selection of a right one uneasy and complicated. The purpose of this study is to propose a new alternative view in selecting development models from the perspective of degree of flexibility in different project situations. The results of a survey conducted to 74 project managers and software developers indicate that there are three naturally occurring development model groups, including heavyweight (Waterfall and V models), middleweight (Incremental and Spiral models), and lightweight (Extreme Programming and SCRUM). A canonical function is identified to help project managers select an appropriate software development model for each potential or planned project.

E-commerce is an online-based sales system, which is used to expand sales and increase sales in the Indonesian Book Room CV. In terms of sales now CV Ruang Buku Indonesia has many competitors who use internet technology to make this business lag and the sales and purchase processes are less than optimal, even decreased. Things like this can cause a business to close. Based on this, the development in the sales system is made into e-commerce with a view controller model (MVC) to facilitate the operation of the online sales system. The software development model used is the waterfall model with several stages of communication, planning, modeling, construction, and deployment. This research resulted in e-commerce of Indonesian Book Room with a view controller model that aims to face competitors and increase sales.

Agile software development has established as a reliable alternative to waterfall software development model. Unfortunately the use of agile software development has been limited to time based contracts and not for time limited contracts. The main reason for this limitation is the “Agile manifesto” itself. The forth value of the manifesto states that agile believers find more value in “Responding to change over following a plan”. This is the one of the main reasons why agile software development methods are not preferred for a fixed priced contract or time limited contract. The following case study provides an example on how the agile software development can be used for fixed priced software development contracts even when operating in offshore context. The agile software development concepts were used throughout to plan, execute, monitor, report, etc. for the project documented in this case study.
