This paper reviewed and discussed some key issues of structural health monitoring (SHM) of long-span bridges. Firstly, the current situation of the application of structural health monitoring technique to long-span bridges was summarized in detail. Secondly, starting from the purpose of ensuring the safety of operational bridges, the composition characteristics and functional requirements of structural health monitoring system of long-span bridges were discussed, which include the global design principles of health monitoring system and the design approaches for each subsystem. Finally, some challenges of the technique of SHM were proposed including structural force analysis, the principles of optimized distribution of sensors and the assessment methods of structural damages of bridges etc,.

<p>Stonecutters Bridge is 1,018m main span cable stayed bridge in Hong Kong. The bridge incorporates a Wind and Structural Health Monitoring System (WASHMS) for monitoring the environmental loading condition such as traffic, temperature, wind and earthquake as well as the structural responses of the bridge including deflections, strains and long-term change of the bridge. A very powerful typhoon called Mangkhut, with 1- minute sustained wind speed up to 285km/h (180mph), struck Hong Kong on September 16, 2018. The response of Stonecutters Bridge under the action of this typhoon and the site-specific typhoon data have been recorded by the WASHMS. This paper analyses the measurement data of the typhoon loading and the bridge responses to demonstrate the use of health monitoring system for long span bridges and to verify the design of the bridge by comparison of the wind loading condition and stress conditions in major structural components.</p>

The peripheral structure of Dalian stadium is a long-span spatial truss structure. To ensure the safety of the peripheral structure during construction and operation period, the permanent structure health monitoring system is implemented. This paper first introduces the structural features of the Dalian stadium, and then illustrates the permanent monitoring program from the aspects of the hardware, the monitoring scheme and the function. This developed monitoring system is utilized to monitor the stress of the truss, and the dynamic response of the structure. Large amounts of data are obtained through the health monitoring system, and thus the safe condition of the structure can be evaluated based on data analysis.

Intelligent health monitoring system of the long-span railway cable-stayed bridge requires the comprehensive knowledge of instrumentation, analytical and information processing technologies with the knowledge and experiences in design, construction, operation and maintenance of railway cable-stayed bridge for long-term monitoring the performance throughout its lifecycle. It is necessary to perform sensor-based structural monitoring for identifying the bridge conditions in order to assure the structural safety and to evaluate the operational performance. The considerations for deploying a proper monitoring system are appropriate sensor instrumentation, robust signal acquisition, reliable signal processing, and intelligent signal and information processing. The experience on developing an autonomous monitoring system in the one certain railway cable-stayed bridge newly constructed is introduced in this paper. Sensor and hardware instrumentation, signal transmission, signal acquisition and analysis are schematically described mainly. Experience through this work will be worthwhile lessons for other similar efforts.
