In this case study, learners are introduced to Sloane, a diversity and inclusion officer who is working to create more inclusive sport and recreation opportunities in her community. A national-level sport event will be hosted in her community and provides an opportunity to elevate and accelerate the work she is already doing with sport and recreation organizations. Learners will develop an understanding of two key themes: LGBTQ2+ inclusion and event leveraging. Working through the case will require learners to think critically about sexuality and gender identity in the context of sport participation and organizations. Furthermore, learners will have the opportunity to think creatively about how they can support innovation in organizational cultures and practices with a view to fostering more inclusive, welcoming, and safe sport organizations.

This Major Research Paper (MRP) is a case study of the queer hip hop and dancehall party Yes Yes Y’all (YYY). This MRP seeks to challenge white, cismale metanarratives in Toronto’s queer community. This paper employs Critical Race Theory (CRT) and queer theory as theoretical frameworks. Racialization, racism, homophobia, homonormativities and homonational rhetoric within queer discourses are interrogated throughout the analysis. In pursuit of this research, five participants and two key informants were interviewed. Four emergent themes are explored: fluid identities, the intersection of race and sexuality, dancing as expression of sexuality and gender identity, and the transgressive possibilities of YYY.

Invented traditions are worldmaking devices that mobilise places for tourism consumption. They are regularly used to project a tourist sense of otherness. However, they can also be sites of resistance and transgression in tourism. This article explores the transgressive potential of invented traditions as a locus of cultural change that challenges processes of othering in tourism. It reflects on the disruption of alterity with a case study of La Mucada, an invented rural tradition in Mallorca, which problematises the romantic categories through which the island is consumed by tourists. Invented traditions are reconsidered in relational terms as progressive spaces that can generate more partial, fluid or unfixed identifications. A performative understanding of transgression is proposed, emphasising the banal tourist ways in which epistemologies of difference are disrupted. Ludic transgressions also target other dichotomies, including stable notions of sexuality and gender.

After the publication of his pioneering book Sexual Excitement in 1979, Robert Stoller devoted the last 12 years of his life to the study of the pornographic film industry. To do so, he conducted an ethnographic study of people working in the industry in order to find out how it produced ‘perverse fantasies’ that successfully communicated sexual excitement to other people. In the course of his investigation he observed and interviewed those involved in the making of pornographic films. He hypothesized that the ‘scenarios’ developed and performed by people in the porn industry were based on their own perverse fantasies and their frustrations, injuries and conflicts over sexuality and gender; and that the porn industry had developed a systematic method and accumulated a sophisticated body of knowledge about the production of sexual excitement. This paper explores Stoller's theses and shows how they fared in his investigation.

In recent years there has been a strong “public turn” within universities that is renewing interest in collaborative approaches to knowledge creation. This article draws on performance studies literature to explore the cross-disciplinary collaborations made possible when the academy broadens our scope of inquiry to include knowledge produced through performance. It takes as a case study the “Peabody Ballroom Experience,” an ongoing collaboration between the Johns Hopkins University Sheridan Libraries, the Peabody Institute BFA Dance program, and Baltimore’s ballroom community—a performance-based arts culture comprising gay, lesbian, queer, transgender, and gender-nonconforming people of color.
