Almost all the metabolically inactive manganese in the gill tissue of the fresh water bivalve mollusc Elliptio complanatus (Solander) can be extracted with a 10% neutral solution of EDTA (ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid). The extracted manganese is in the trivalent state. Inorganic pyrophosphate is also found in the extract. A complex of manganipyrophosphate could account for the observed properties of the metal in vivo.
