The structure and chemical composition of the surface layers of aluminum 6000-series alloys after crystallization and homogenization annealing at 580 °C were investigated. It is shown that the state of the surface significantly depends on the presence of impurities in the coolant of the crystallizer, which deteriorate the continuity of the oxide film, which leads to the formation of light color of individual parts of the ingot surface.

The results of modeling a composite nickel-phosphorus coating obtained by chemical deposition are presented. The state of structural-phase disordering of the coating surface is considered. The analysis of possible structural states in the surface layers of the coating is carried out. A graph of Me atoms volume changes in phosphorus-containing compounds MexPy(Ме – Fe, Cr, Ni) and the maximum stability temperature NixPyis plotted depending on the composition. The idealized images of the projections of tetragonal and trigonal phosphorus-containing phases structures are constructed.

This paper presents the results of tribometric investigations of ground surfaces machined with different combinations of grinding regime. Though they belong to the same class of surface roughness, they show significant differences in tribological properties. This is a consequence of differences in the state of material in the surface layers, which arise from the machining regime parameters variation. These results emphasize the essential importance of correct definition of tribological criteria for contact surface states in the design phase.

This paper examines the causes and the collapse of an historic masonry tower, underlining the influence of material's resistance and in particular its state of conservation. NDT tests such as sonic test on masonry evaluates wave propagation's speed through the surface layers to investigate the state of material and stratification. A FE model has been used to determine dynamic parameter of the structure, and to make a comparison than effective damages. The investigation face the relation between the material and the structural seismic response of the tower.
