By the beginning of the twentieth century, our understanding of matter was completely transformed by the great discoveries of electromagnetism and relativity. ‘Energy, mass, and light’ outlines Einstein’s special theory of relativity of 1905, which describes what happens when objects move at speeds close to the speed of light. The theory transformed our understanding of the nature of space and time, and matter through the equivalence of mass and energy. In 1916, Einstein extended the theory to include gravity in the general theory of relativity, which revealed that matter affects space by curving space around it.

Abstract The F - t curve obtained from the process of applying and releasing force to the piezoelectric sensor shows that in the atomic scale, the time coordinate is equivalent to the position coordinate. The time-position coordinate relationship calculated by the experimental data is consistent with the geometric unit obtained in the general theory of relativity, thus the experiment verifies the symmetry of length and time,and connection between the microscopic - quantum mechanics and the macroscopic - general theory of relativity, and a new method for calculating the speed of light is obtained.

This chapter discusses how relativity theory affects our ideas about space, time, and motion. The special theory of relativity does not introduce the idea that motion is relative: it combines that idea, already present in Newtonian physics, with the idea that the speed of light does not depend on the motion of the source. This combination has surprising consequences: that moving clocks run slow; that moving rods shrink. This is apparently in flat contradiction with the relativity principle. The resolution of this paradox looks very different depending on one’s view of what spacetime is: is it simply a codification of physics, or can it do explanatory work in its own right. Thus the paradox lets us get clearer on what is at stake in these questions about the nature of spacetime. Relativity also imperils the idea that simultaneity—the relationship between two events when they occur at the same time—is relative and/or conventional. The epilogue of the chapter briefly discusses the general theory of relativity.

Recently, the secular pericentre precession was analytically computed to the second post-Newtonian (2PN) order by the present author with the Gauss equations in terms of the osculating Keplerian orbital elements in order to obtain closer contact with the observations in astronomical and astrophysical scenarios of potential interest. A discrepancy in previous results from other authors was found. Moreover, some of such findings by the same authors were deemed as mutually inconsistent. In this paper, it is demonstrated that, in fact, some calculation errors plagued the most recent calculations by the present author. They are explicitly disclosed and corrected. As a result, all of the examined approaches mutually agree, yielding the same analytical expression for the total 2PN pericentre precession once the appropriate conversions from the adopted parameterisations are made. It is also shown that, in the future, it may become measurable, at least in principle, for some of the recently discovered short-period S-stars in Sgr A*, such as S62 and S4714.
