A simple method for the synthesis of phthalazinetrione derivatives by a one-pot three-component condensation reaction of phthalhydrazide, 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and aldehydes catalyzed by the ionic liquid 4-(3-methyl-1-imidazolio)-1-butanesulfonic acid hydrogen sulfate ([BSO3HmIm]HSO4) is reported. Good to excellent yields were obtained in short reaction times in the solvent PEG 600 (polyethylene glycol 600) at 120 °C. The strategy proved to be efficient and environmentally benign. The catalyst/solvent system could easily be recovered and reused for at least 5 times without noticeable loss of activity

This article relates to the melt-processing and properties of polylactic acid (PLA) reinforced with cellulose microfibrils (CMFs). The CMFs with diameters of 20–80 nm and lengths in the order of microns were isolated from wood sawdust. The purpose of the present study was to find a simple method to overcome the problems associated with feeding and aggregation of the nanoscale fibers in PLA melt. Two fiber carriers were compared, that is, natural rubber (NR) latex and polyethylene glycol (PEG) with a molecular weight of 4000 g mol−1. The results showed that with the aid of carrier, CMFs were successfully dispersed in the composites, enabling the strong reinforcing action of the fibrils to be realized. The type of carriers used had significant effects on the final properties of the PLA composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis results showed an eightfold improvement in modulus at elevated temperature (90°C) for the composite with 3 wt% CMFs using PEG as carrier. This enhancement was attributed to the combined effects of fiber reinforcement and cold crystallization induced in the PLA. With NR latex as carrier, the composite of high tensile strength was achieved by introducing the epoxidized rubber (ENR) in a ratio of 2:3 (ENR:NR) as a compatibilizer to improve adhesion between phases in the composites.

A rapid and simple method for detecting circulating immune complexes based on turbidity measurements following polyethylene glycol precipitation was studied with regard to its suitability as a routine assay in clinical laboratories. This method was found to have an acceptable degree of precision provided the temperature was carefully controlled. The mean value obtained with a group of 70 blood donors was 0·09 (SD 0·05) and the 90th percentile value was 0·16. There was no significant difference between values obtained from groups divided on the basis of age or sex. Of 70 diabetic sera assayed by the polyethylene glycol turbidity method, 20% gave positive values although only 10% were strongly positive. The corresponding figures for the solid phase Clq binding method were 15·7% and 14·3%, respectively. Correlation between the two methods was poor. It was concluded that although both methods have a similar likelihood of detecting immune complexes in randomly selected diabetics, it is probable that different immune complexes were being detected.
