The initial parameter method, in the form proposed by V. Z. Vlasov, is presented and extended to the case of symmetric bending of cylindrical shells. It is shown that the method can be used efficiently for the solution of shells with and without intermediate supports. The loads applied to the shell can be arbitrarily distributed and discontinuous in the axial direction of the shell. The problem formulation has the distinct advantage that the complete solution contains at most two unknown “initial parameters.” These unknown parameters are determined from the boundary conditions. For shells on many supports the solution contains additional unknowns which can be determined from the support conditions. In any case, the solution consists of solving only two sets of algebraic equations. Tables of influence coefficients and loading functions for some common load cases are given in the paper. Some examples are worked out to illustrate the application of the method of initial parameters.

Considered herein is the vibration and stability problems of a slender column subjected to generalized load with a force directed toward the positive pole. The load is developed by heads composed of circular profile elements. The geometrically nonlinear problem of stability and free vibrations is formulated on the basis of Hamilton's principle, and due to nonlinearity, the problem is solved by applying the small parameter method. Vibration and stability results show the influence of chosen parameters that characterize the considered column (including initial prestressing). The assumed mathematical model is validated by experimental results.

Toward estimating accurately the distortional response of box girders, in this article, distortion of steel box girders strengthened with intermediate solid diaphragms under eccentric loads is analyzed by employing the so-called initial parameter method. A new model of high-order statically indeterminate structure was established with three orthogonal redundant forces acting at the junction between the girder and diaphragms. Emphasis is put onto the interaction between the girder and diaphragms, where a hypothetical bi-moment B pi indicating all longitudinal redundant force components for diaphragm was proposed besides the moment Mpi for in-plane shear component. Simplified initial parameter method solutions for distortional angle and distortional warping stresses and displacements were derived based on the in-plane and out-of-plane compatibilities between the girder and diaphragms. Taking box girders with three and five intermediate diaphragms as an example, the proposed initial parameter method solutions have good agreement with the finite element analysis ones. Finally, distortional behavior under moving eccentric loads is investigated, resulting in a bowl-shaped curve for moment Mpi and an approximate trigonometric function for bi-moment Bpi. Results show that diaphragms have a stronger resistance on in-plane distortional shear for the loads in midspan than on ends. Plus, the thick diaphragm holds a stronger restraint on distortional warping deformations and stresses than the thin one.
