Dynamics of the Abra alba muddy fine sand community of the Rance Basin (western English Channel), initially sampled in one station by Retière at the beginning of the 1970s after the tidal power station built at the mouth of the estuary went into service, was reassessed from 1995 to 1997. Results showed a more ‘mature’ community in 1995–1997 with an increase in the number of species. After a short period, in spring 1995, during which the structure of the community was comparable to those described in 1972–1973, the assemblage was characterized by a great interannual structural stability. Densities of dominant species seem to fluctuate around a mean value comparable to the carrying capacity of the biota for these species. The recruitment of the dominant species with a long life span appears low compared to the densities of adults but seems sufficient to assure the replacement of individuals. Our results suggest that the pattern of massive recruitment followed by high mortality rates could not be the general rule and that a pattern of moderate recruitment followed by low post-settlement mortality of recruits should be more frequent.

The issues of solving modern problems related to meeting the energy needs of environmental hydraulic engineering are considered. The problem of improving the methodological basis for choosing the optimal arrangement of elements of photovoltaic devices (SPEU) on the blocks of the dam building of hydroelectric power plants (HPP) of 4 main types is formulated. The graphical dependences of the estimation of the power ratio of the combined SPEU and HPP on the diameter of the turbine wheel are analyzed. As a result of the analysis of the influence of the location of the transformer on the possibility of placing the SPEU on the buildings of the hydroelectric power station, it was revealed that in order to increase the adaptability of the revitalized even large hydro system with a separate building of the hydroelectric power station, it is preferable to place power transformers from the downstream side. It is noted that according to the results of the schematic study for the medium-pressure hydroelectric complex Lagdo in the north of Cameroon, the placement of solar cells will provide an additional 6.95% of the capacity of the operating hydroelectric power station.



This paper reviews, on a world-wide basis, the production from hydro-electric installations and forecasts which have been made of potential water-power resources. Various types of development are described. It considers how hydro-electric resources can best be used in an interconnected electricity supply system with thermal and nuclear generation, including pumping to assist in the economic use of other fuels. Hydro-electric development in the United Kingdom is briefly described. The availability of tidal energy is reviewed, and reference made to the Ranee Tidal Power Station in France.
