AbstractA high -μβ chromophore APII utilizing isophorone as π-conjugation bridge was processed into both PMMA guest host and crosslinked (XL) polyurethane network with various loading densities. High electro -optic coefficients, r33 = 30 pm/V (in PMMA) and r33 = 32 pm/V (in polyurethane) at 1.06 μm were obtained. Alignment temporal stability ranged from 90 to 120°C for XL polymer network. There is virtually no intrinsic absorption loss at 1.3 μm (solution measurement). Also noteworthy is that high optimum loading densities of this chromophore are attainable in both cases without detectable chromophore aggregation due to intermolecular electrostatic interactions.

AbstractThe rocketed development concerning electro-optic polymers fundamentally motivated by its pragmatic application in envisioning second-order nonlinear optics and waveguiding are cardinal. Modern synthetic strategies consigned an outstanding optical quality amorphous polymers with enhanced properties. Documented data revealed a huge progress in understanding their implementation, however challenges still exist regarding their temporal stabilities etc. This review delivers a brief investigation of nonlinear optical (NLO) polymer materials demonstrated over previous decades. Besides, their categorical explanation along with their structural architecting via engineering polymeric backbone or functionalization of the molecular entities have been reviewed. Correspondingly, their temporal and thermal stabilities accompanied by NLO characteristics features are also discussed.

ABSTRACTNovel approaches to second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) side-chain polyquinolines and polyimides are described. The syntheses and the characterization of the polymers are detailed. The electro-optical coefficients (r33), temporal stability of dipole alignment, and other physical properties of the NLO polymers are presented.

ABSTRACTA modular approach for making second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) side-chain aromatic polyquinolines has been developed. The synthesis provides a method for readily incorporating NLO chromophores into the pendent phenyl moieties of parent polyquinolines at the final stage via the Mitsunobu reaction. The method produces polyquinolines with a wide range of polymer backbones and offers great flexibility in the selection of NLO chromophores. These side-chain NLO polyquinolines demonstrate high electro-optic (E-O) activities (up to 35 pm/V at 830 nm and 22 pm/V at 1300 nm) and excellent tradeoffs among thermal, optical, and electrical properties. Most recently, a series of novel second-order NLO thermoset polymers containing silicon-perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) has also been synthesized. This was accomplished via the crosslinking reaction between the di(trifluorovinylether)-containing NLO chromophores and the tris(trifluorovinylether) monomer in solid state at 180-250 °C. The radical-mediated, stepwise cycloaddition reaction offers great tolerance to very sensitive functional groups such as tricyanovinyl acceptor. A variety of NLO chromophores could be easily incorporated into these thermoset polymers compared to the modular approach. Preliminary results have indicated these polymers to possess excellent processability, low optical loss, and a combination of highly desirable thermal, nonlinear optical, and mechanical properties.
