Abstract We propose a novel procedure of assigning a pair of non-unitary topological quantum field theories (TQFTs), TFT±[$$ \mathcal{T} $$ T rank 0], to a (2+1)D interacting $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 superconformal field theory (SCFT) $$ \mathcal{T} $$ T rank 0 of rank 0, i.e. having no Coulomb and Higgs branches. The topological theories arise from particular degenerate limits of the SCFT. Modular data of the non-unitary TQFTs are extracted from the supersymmetric partition functions in the degenerate limits. As a non-trivial dictionary, we propose that F = maxα (− log|$$ {S}_{0\alpha}^{\left(+\right)} $$ S 0 α + |) = maxα (− log|$$ {S}_{0\alpha}^{\left(-\right)} $$ S 0 α − |), where F is the round three-sphere free energy of $$ \mathcal{T} $$ T rank 0 and $$ {S}_{0\alpha}^{\left(\pm \right)} $$ S 0 α ± is the first column in the modular S-matrix of TFT±. From the dictionary, we derive the lower bound on F, F ≥ − log $$ \left(\sqrt{\frac{5-\sqrt{5}}{10}}\right) $$ 5 − 5 10 ≃ 0.642965, which holds for any rank 0 SCFT. The bound is saturated by the minimal $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SCFT proposed by Gang-Yamazaki, whose associated topological theories are both the Lee-Yang TQFT. We explicitly work out the (rank 0 SCFT)/(non-unitary TQFTs) correspondence for infinitely many examples.

Abstract We revisit certain natural algebraic transformations on the space of 3D topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) called “Galois conjugations.” Using a notion of multiboundary entanglement entropy (MEE) defined for TQFTs on compact 3-manifolds with disjoint boundaries, we give these abstract transformations additional physical meaning. In the process, we prove a theorem on the invariance of MEE along orbits of the Galois action in the case of arbitrary Abelian theories defined on any link complement in S3. We then give a generalization to non-Abelian TQFTs living on certain infinite classes of torus link complements. Along the way, we find an interplay between the modular data of non-Abelian TQFTs, the topology of the ambient spacetime, and the Galois action. These results are suggestive of a deeper connection between entanglement and fusion.

Topological quantum field theories and fractional statistics are both defined in multiply connected manifolds. We study the relationship between both theories in 2 + 1 dimensions and we show that, due to the multiply-connected character of the manifold, the propagator for any quantum (field) theory always contains a first order pole that can be identified with a physical excitation with fractional spin. The article starts by reviewing the definition of general covariance in the Hamiltonian formalism, the gauge-fixing problem and the quantization following the lines of Batalin, Fradkin and Vilkovisky. The BRST–BFV quantization is reviewed in order to understand the topological approach proposed here.

We show that any 3D topological quantum field theory satisfying physically reasonable factorizability conditions has associated to it in a natural way a Hopf algebra object in a suitable tensor category. We also show that all objects in the tensor category have the structure of left-left crossed bimodules over the Hopf algebra object. For 4D factorizable topological quantum filed theories, we provide by analogous methods a construction of a Hopf algebra category.

We characterize Frobenius algebras A as algebras having a comultiplication which is a map of A-modules. This characterization allows a simple demonstration of the compatibility of Frobenius algebra structure with direct sums. We then classify the indecomposable Frobenius algebras as being either “annihilator algebras” — algebras whose socle is a principal ideal — or field extensions. The relationship between two-dimensional topological quantum field theories and Frobenius algebras is then formulated as an equivalence of categories. The proof hinges on our new characterization of Frobenius algebras. These results together provide a classification of the indecomposable two-dimensional topological quantum field theories.

A general solution of the Batalin–Vilkovisky master equation was formulated in terms of generalized fields. Recently, a superfields approach of obtaining solutions of the Batalin–Vilkovisky master equation is also established. Superfields formalism is usually applied to topological quantum field theories. However, generalized fields method is suitable to find solutions of the Batalin–Vilkovisky master equation either for topological quantum field theories or the usual gauge theories like Yang–Mills theory. We show that by truncating some components of superfields with appropriate actions, generalized fields formalism of the usual gauge theories result. We demonstrate that for some topological quantum field theories and the relativistic particle both of the methods possess the same field contents and yield similar results. Inspired by the observed relations, we give the solution of the BV master equation for on-shell N=1 supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory utilizing superfields.

This paper proposes a different approach to derive Witten's formula relating Donaldson and Seiberg–Witten invariants for four-manifolds, via equivariant localization techniques. Our approach proposes a direct study on the Donaldson–Witten and Seiberg–Witten configuration spaces, not making use the theory of non-abelian monopoles.

The constraints of BF topological gauge theories are used to construct Hamiltonians which are anti-commutators of the BRST and anti-BRST operators. Such Hamiltonians are a signature of topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). By construction, both classes of topological field theories share the same phase spaces and constraints. We find that, for (2+1)- and (1+1)-dimensional space-times foliated as M=Σ × ℝ, a homomorphism exists between the constraint algebras of our TQFT and those of canonical gravity. The metrics on the two-dimensional hypersurfaces are also obtained.
