The motivation of this paper is to develop a new and straightforward approach to provide a topology optimization solution for the layout design of stiffened plate/shell structures. Inspired by the similarities between the branching patterns in nature and stiffener layout patterns in engineering, a so-called material increasing design concept is first introduced to represent the topology configuration of the stiffened plate/shell structures. In addition, a well-founded mathematical explanation for the principles, properties, and mechanisms of adaptive growth behaviors of branching patterns in nature is derived from the Kuhn–Tucker conditions, leading to a novel optimality criterion which can serve engineering purposes for stiffener layout design. In this criterion, the common growth mechanism is described as an ideal ‘balanced point’ among individual branches in terms of their weight distribution. After characterizing the relationship between the growth behavior and mechanics self-adaptability, the reproduction of branching patterns in nature is implemented by a global coordinative model, which consists of several bottom programming models to find the optimal height distributions of individual branches and a top programming model to play a global coordinative role among them. The benefit and the advantages of the suggested method are illustrated with several 2D examples that are widely used in the recent research of topology optimization.

Injection moulding is an important manufacturing method for plastic parts. There are however many moulding quality defects caused by inappropriate setting of moulding process conditions, as well as the poorly designed plastic part geometry. Often, stiffeners are used in a plastic part to increase its strength. However, if the stiffeners are not designed properly, they will introduce one or more moulding quality problems, which in turn will worsen the part strength rather than increasing it. Although there have been quite a lot of researches on optimising moulding quality, it is often difficult to minimize multiple quality defects simultaneously. In this paper, we propose to employ flow uniformity as the optimisation objective to address this problem. A number of stiffener layout designs are evaluated in terms of this objective to determine the best design, where standard deviations of filling times and pressures at the extremities of the plastic part are used to measure the uniformity of flow. A simple case study is also presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methodology.

This paper refers to a numerical study of the hypo-thermal behaviour of a pine tree in a forest fire environment. The pine tree thermal response numerical model is based on energy balance integral equations for the tree elements and mass balance integral equation for the water in the tree. The simulation performed considers the heat conduction through the tree elements, heat exchanges by convection between the external tree surfaces and the environment, heat exchanges by radiation between the flame and the external tree surfaces and water heat loss by evaporation from the tree to the environment. The virtual three-dimensional tree model has a height of 7.5 m and is constituted by 8863 cylindrical elements representative of its trunks, branches and leaves. The fire front has 10 m long and a 2 m high. The study was conducted taking into account that the pine tree is located 5, 10 or 15 m from the fire front. For these three analyzed distances, the numerical results obtained regarding to the distribution of the view factors, mean radiant temperature and surface temperatures of the pine tree are presented. As main conclusion, it can be stated that the values of the view factor, MRT and surface temperatures of the pine tree decrease with increasing distance from the pine tree in front of fire.
