AbstractDensity-based topology optimization and node-based shape optimization are often used sequentially to generate production-ready designs. In this work, we address the challenge to couple density-based topology optimization and node-based shape optimization into a single optimization problem by using an embedding domain discretization technique. In our approach, a variable shape is explicitly represented by the boundary of an embedded body. Furthermore, the embedding domain in form of a structured mesh allows us to introduce a variable, pseudo-density field. In this way, we attempt to bring the advantages of both topology and shape optimization methods together and to provide an efficient way to design fine-tuned structures without predefined topological features.

This work presents the framework to optimally design a cantilever for torsion mode frequency maximization. A cantilever design problem is formulated by topology and shape optimization methods. The torsion mode frequency is selected as an objective function, and the volume of the cantilever and the first bending mode frequency are constrained. Two optimization problems are defined and sequentially solved for the specific values. A new idea in this work is using a final topology obtained in the topology optimization problem as an initial shape in the shape optimization problem. The torsional mode frequency of the optimized cantilever is well improved in comparison with a nominal cantilever.

Tractors are one of the most important agricultural machinery in the world. They provide agricultural activities in challenging conditions by using various agricultural machineries which are added on them. Therefore, there has been a rising demand for tractor use for agricultural activities. During the power transmission, tractor clutches are exposed to high static and cyclic loading directly. Thus, most of clutch parts fail before completing their design life which is under 106 cycles. Especially, because of the high stress, there are a number of fractures and breakages are observed around the pin area of the finger mechanisms. Due to these reasons, it is necessary to re-design these fingers by using modern optimization techniques and finite element analysis. This paper presents an approach for analysis and re-designs process of tractor clutch PTO finger. Firstly, the original designs of the PTO fingers are analyzed by using finite element analysis. Static structural analyses are applied on these fingers by using ANSYS static structural module. The boundary conditions are determined according to the data from the axial fatigue test bench. Afterwards, the stress-life based fatigue analyses are performed with respect to Goodman criterion. It is seem that the original design of the PTO finger, failed before the design life. Hence, the PTO finger is completely re-designed by using topology and shape optimization methods. Topology optimization is used to find the optimum material distribution of the PTO fingers. Topology optimization is performed in solidThinking Inspire software. The precise dimensions of the PTO fingers are determined by using shape optimization and response surface methodology. Two different design parameters, which are finger thickness and height, are selected for design of experiment and 15 various cases are analyzed. By using DOE method three different equations are obtained which are maximum stresses, mass, and displacement depending on the selected design parameters. These equations are used in the optimization as objective and constraint equations in MATLAB. The results indicate that the proposed models predict the responses adequately within the limits of the parameters being used. The final dimensions of the fingers are determined after shape optimization. The new designs of the PTO fingers are re-analyzed in terms of static and fatigue analysis. The new design of the PTO finger passed the analysis successfully. As a result of the study, the finger mass is increased 7% but it is quite small. Maximum Equivalent Von-Misses stress reduction of 25.3% is achieved. Fatigue durability of the PTO finger is improved 53.2%. The rigidity is improved up to 27.9% compared to the initial design. The optimal results show that the developed method can be used to design a durable, low manufacturing cost and lightweight clutch parts.

In the paper the global optimization problem of truss systems is studied.  The genetic algorithms are employed for the optimization. As the objective function the structure mass is treated; the constraints include equilibrium, local stability and other requirements.  All the truss system characteristics needed for genetic algorithm are obtained via finite element solution. Topology optimization of truss system is performed using original modified genetic algorithm, while the shape optimization – using ordinary genetic algorithm. Numerical solutions are presented. The obtained solutions are compared with global extremes obtained using full search algorithm.  All the numerical examples are solved using original software.

There are less topology optimization methods for bars structure than those for continuum structure. Bionic intelligent method is a powerful way to solve the topology optimization problems of bars structure since it is of good global optimization capacity and convenient for numerical calculation. This article presents a SKO topology optimization model for bars structure based on SKO (Soft Kill Option) method derived from adaptive growth rules of trees, bones, etc. The model has been applied to solve the topology optimization problem of a space frame. It uses three optimization strategies, which are constant, decreasing and increasing material removed rate. The impact on the optimization processes and results of different strategies are discussed, and the validity of the proposed model is proved.

Abstract The range of application of structural optimization methods can be considerably enlarged by using decomposition techniques. In this paper a novel procedure is introduced to deal with such problems more efficiently. The mechanical structure resp. system is divided into several subsystems splitting up the design variables, objective functions, and constraints accordingly. The boundary state quantities of the subsystems and the global (i.e. subsystem overlapping) functions are approximated by a sensitivity analysis of the entire system using suitable approximation concepts. It is thus possible to optimize the subsystems independently. Variables, objective functions and constraints can be chosen arbitrarily; all coupling information is obtained from the sensitivity analysis by means of global information. The application of this technique is demonstrated by a two-dimensional shape optimization problem.

SummaryThis study presents an optimal design procedure including topology optimization and size–shape optimization methods to maximize mechanical advantage (which is defined as the ratio of output force to input force) of the synthesized compliant mechanism. The formulation of the topology optimization method to design compliant mechanisms with multiple output ports is presented. The topology-optimized result is used as the initial design domain for subsequent size–shape optimization process. The proposed optimal design procedure is used to synthesize an adaptive compliant gripper with high mechanical advantage. The proposed gripper is a monolithic two-finger design and is prototyped using silicon rubber. Experimental studies including mechanical advantage test, object grasping test, and payload test are carried out to evaluate the design. The results show that the proposed adaptive complaint gripper assembly can effectively grasp irregular objects up to 2.7 kg.

International competition forces companies to use computer methods in order to accelerate the time-consuming development processes and further to improve the product quality. The use of numeric optimization methods can be very helpful to obtain ‘systematic and proper’ solution variants. Solutions that have been generated automatically provide the designer with new, previously unknown suggestions for problem solution. These structural optimization tools have not yet been sufficiently integrated into the design process. Within a research project, software companies, research institutes and users are working on the integration of topology and shape optimization. This article presents an example of this process and describes the potential of the structure optimization tools based on the example of a machine tool.
