AbstractWe prove upper bounds for the average size of the $$\ell $$ ℓ -torsion $${{\,\mathrm{Cl}\,}}_K[\ell ]$$ Cl K [ ℓ ] of the class group of K, as K runs through certain natural families of number fields and $$\ell $$ ℓ is a positive integer. We refine a key argument, used in almost all results of this type, which links upper bounds for $${{\,\mathrm{Cl}\,}}_K[\ell ]$$ Cl K [ ℓ ] to the existence of many primes splitting completely in K that are small compared to the discriminant of K. Our improvements are achieved through the introduction of a new family of specialised invariants of number fields to replace the discriminant in this argument, in conjunction with new counting results for these invariants. This leads to significantly improved upper bounds for the average and sometimes even higher moments of $${{\,\mathrm{Cl}\,}}_K[\ell ]$$ Cl K [ ℓ ] for many families of number fields K considered in the literature, for example, for the families of all degree-d-fields for $$d\in \{2,3,4,5\}$$ d ∈ { 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 } (and non-$$D_4$$ D 4 if $$d=4$$ d = 4 ). As an application of the case $$d=2$$ d = 2 we obtain the best upper bounds for the number of $$D_p$$ D p -fields of bounded discriminant, for primes $$p>3$$ p > 3 .

In the first part of the present paper, we shall make some simple observations on the ideal class groups of algebraic number fields, following the group-theoretical method of Tschebotarew. The applications on cyclotomic fields (Theorems 5, 6) may be of some interest. In the last section, we shall give a proof to a theorem of Kummer on the ideal class group of a cyclotomic field.

We propose a candidate, which we call the fractional Galois ideal after Snaith's fractional ideal, for replacing the classical Stickelberger ideal associated to an abelian extension of number fields. The Stickelberger ideal can be seen as gathering information about those L-functions of the extension which are non-zero at the special point s = 0, and was conjectured by Brumer to give annihilators of class-groups viewed as Galois modules. An earlier version of the fractional Galois ideal extended the Stickelberger ideal to include L-functions with a simple zero at s = 0, and was shown by the present author to provide class-group annihilators not existing in the Stickelberger ideal. The version presented in this paper deals with L-functions of arbitrary order of vanishing at s = 0, and we give evidence using results of Popescu and Rubin that it is closely related to the Fitting ideal of the class-group, a canonical ideal of annihilators. Finally, we prove an equality involving Stark elements and class-groups originally due to Büyükboduk, but under a slightly different assumption, the advantage being that we need none of the Kolyvagin system machinery used in the original proof.

In this paper, we show that the number of real quadratic fields 𝕂 of discriminant Δ𝕂 < x whose class group has an element of order g (with g even) is ≥ x1/g/5 if x > x0, uniformly for positive integers g ≤ ( log log x)/(8 log log log x). We also apply the result to find real quadratic number fields whose class numbers have many prime factors.

AbstractAn upper bound is given for the order of the kernel of the map on Sideal class groups that is induced by For some special types of number fields F the connection between the size of the above kernel for and the units and norms in are examined. Let K2(O) denote the Milnor K-group of the ring of integers of a number field. In some cases a formula by Conner, Hurrelbrink and Kolster is extended to show how closely the 4-rank of is related to the 4-rank of the S-ideal class group of

In this paper, we study the K-theory of triangular rings. As an application, we show that for a locally triangular order Λ, the p-torsion in the higher class group Cl2n(Λ) can only occur for primes p which lie under the prime ideals ℘ of [Formula: see text], at which Λ is not maximal.

Let R be the ring of integers of a number field K with class group G. It is classical that R is a unique factorization domain if and only if G is the trivial group; and the finite abelian group G is generally considered as a measure of the failure of unique factorization in R. The first arithmetic description of rings of integers with non-trivial class groups was given in 1960 by L. Carlitz (1). He proved that G is a group of order ≤ two if and only if any two factorizations of an element of R into irreducible elements have the same number of factors. In ((6), p. 469, problem 32) W. Narkiewicz asked for an arithmetic characterization of algebraic number fields K with class numbers ≠ 1, 2. This problem was solved for certain class groups with orders ≤ 9 in (2), and for the case that G is cyclic or a product of k copies of a group of prime order in (5). In this note we solve Narkiewicz's problem in general by giving arithmetical characterizations of a ring of integers whose class group G is any given finite abelian group.

For each finite subgroup [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text], and for each integer [Formula: see text] coprime to [Formula: see text], we construct explicitly infinitely many Galois extensions of [Formula: see text] with group [Formula: see text] and whose ideal class group has [Formula: see text]-rank at least [Formula: see text]. This gives new [Formula: see text]-rank records for class groups of number fields.

AbstractWe provide the reader with a uniform approach for obtaining various useful explicit upper bounds on residues of Dedekind zeta functions of numbers fields and on absolute values of values at $s=1$ of $L$-series associated with primitive characters on ray class groups of number fields. To make it quite clear to the reader how useful such bounds are when dealing with class number problems for CM-fields, we deduce an upper bound for the root discriminants of the normal CM-fields with (relative) class number one.

Let [Formula: see text]. We study the [Formula: see text]-part of the narrow class group in thin families of quadratic number fields of the form [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] are prime numbers, and we prove new lower bounds for the proportion of narrow class groups in these families that have an element of order [Formula: see text]. In the course of our proof, we prove a general double-oscillation estimate for the quadratic residue symbol in quadratic number fields.
