The NCB Cone Indenter is a portable static hardness tester for index testing of small fragments of rock. Correlations between the standard cone indenter number, Is, and uniaxial compressive strength have been determined by the National Coal Board (NCB). This note describes the application of this tool to some Western Canadian sedimentary rocks, and finds that the linear regression equation relating the indenter number and uniaxial compressive strength is different than the suggested NCB equation. Other uses for the index tests are suggested, including geotechnical mapping and the development of blasting and 'cuttability' criteria. Keywords: rock index test, indentation, hardness, uniaxial compressive strength.
