A Gram-positive, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming and strictly aerobic bacterium (Gsoil 161T) was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in Pocheon Province, South Korea. The novel isolate was characterized using a polyphasic approach in order to determine its taxonomic position. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain Gsoil 161T was shown to belong to the family Nocardioidaceae and was related to Aeromicrobium marinum (98.0 % similarity to the type strain), Aeromicrobium alkaliterrae (97.6 %), Aeromicrobium fastidiosum (97.0 %) and Aeromicrobium erythreum (96.7 %); the sequence similarity with other species within the family was less than 94.4 %. It was characterized chemotaxonomically as having ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-9(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and C16 : 0, 10-methyl C18 : 0 (tuberculostearic acid), C16 : 0 2-OH, 10-methyl C17 : 0 and 10-methyl-C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 65.5 mol%. These chemotaxonomic properties and phenotypic characteristics support the affiliation of strain Gsoil 161T to the genus Aeromicrobium. Results of physiological and biochemical tests enabled strain Gsoil 161T to be differentiated genotypically and phenotypically from currently known Aeromicrobium species. Therefore, strain Gsoil 161T represents a novel species, for which the name Aeromicrobium panaciterrae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain Gsoil 161T (=KCTC 19131T=DSM 17939T=CCUG 52476T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic bacterium, strain 2622T, was isolated from gamma-irradiated soil sampled from the Taklimakan desert in Xinjiang, China. Phylogenetic analyses showed that strain 2622T formed a distinct lineage in the family Rhodospirillaceae and shared 91.7 and 90.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with its closest relatives, the type strains of Skermanella xinjiangensis and Skermanella aerolata, respectively. The DNA G+C content of strain 2622T was 71.4 mol% and the isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone Q-10. Based on phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data and phylogenetic analysis, strain 2622T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Rhodospirillaceae, for which the name Desertibacter roseus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Desertibacter roseus is strain 2622T ( = CCTCC AB 208152T  = KCTC 22436T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, yellow-pigmented, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated M0116T, was isolated from the sediment of the Mohe Basin in north-east China. Flexirubin-type pigments were produced. Cells were catalase- and oxidase-positive and non-gliding rods. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain M0116T was a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae and was most closely related to members of the genera Empedobacter , Wautersiella and Weeksella with 90.5–91.0 % sequence similarities. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6 and the major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The DNA G+C content was 38.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain M0116T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Moheibacter sediminis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M0116T ( = CGMCC 1.12708T = JCM 19634T). Emended descriptions of Empedobacter brevis , Wautersiella falsenii and Weeksella virosa are also proposed.

An orange-pigmented, Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic bacterium (UST030701-324T) was isolated from a microbial mat in an estuary in the Bahamas. The DNA G+C content was 33·6 mol%. Predominant fatty acids were i15 : 0, i16 : 0, i17 : 0 3-OH, and summed feature 3, comprising i15 : 0 2-OH and/or 16 : 1ω7c. MK-6 was the only respiratory quinone. Flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences placed UST030701-324T in a distinct lineage in the family Flavobacteriaceae with less than 90·7 % sequence similarity to the members of the nearest genus, Psychroflexus. UST030701-324T can be distinguished from other members of Flavobacteriaceae by a number of chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics. It is thus proposed that UST030701-324T represents a novel taxon designated Nonlabens tegetincola gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain is UST030701-324T (=NRRL B-41136T=JCM 12886T).

A thermotolerant, alkalitolerant, Gram-stain-negative and strictly aerobic bacterium, designated strain YIM 77974T, was isolated from a geothermally heated soil sample collected at Rehai National Park, Tengchong, Yunnan province, south-west China. Cells of the strain were rod-shaped and colonies were light brown and circular. The strain grew in the presence of 0–3 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0–1 %) and at pH 7.0–10.0 (optimum, pH 8.0) and 30–55 °C (optimum, 45 °C). The only quinone was Q-8 and the genomic DNA G+C content was 68.3 mol%. Major fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C16 : 0, iso-C17 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C11 : 0. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, an unidentified aminophospholipid, three unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified polar lipids. On the basis of the morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics as well as genotypic data, it is proposed that this strain should be classified as a representative of a novel genus and species, Rehaibacterium terrae gen. nov., sp. nov., in the family Xanthomonadaceae . The type strain is strain YIM 77974T ( = DSM 25897T = CCTCC AB 2012062T).

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated strain GY12T, was isolated from a tidal flat of South Korea. Cells were moderately halotolerant, catalase- and oxidase-positive rods with gliding motility, and were devoid of flagella. Growth of strain GY12T was observed at 15–40 °C (optimum 25–30 °C), pH 6.0–8.5 (optimum pH 7.0–7.5) and with 1–5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 1–2 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The polar lipids consisted almost entirely of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 34.8 mol% and the only respiratory quinone detected was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). Strain GY12T was most closely related to the genera Gaetbulibacter , Flaviramulus , Mariniflexile and Tamlana with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 94–97 %, but phylogenetic inferences based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain formed phyletic lineages distinct from these genera within the family Flavobacteriaceae . On the basis of phenotypic and molecular features, strain GY12T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Litoribaculum gwangyangense gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is GY12T ( = KACC 16441T = JCM 18325T).

A Gram-stain-negative, yellow, non-spore-forming, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated C3T, was isolated from a cyanobacterial culture pond. Cells were halophilic, rod-shaped and able to move by gliding. Growth of strain C3T was observed at 15–30 °C (optimum 25 °C), pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum pH 7.5), and in the presence of 1–7 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 2–3 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain C3T formed a distinct lineage within the family Flavobacteriaceae and exhibited the highest similarity (95.21 %) to the type strains of Maribacter dokdonensis, Maribacter arcticus, Maribacter orientalis and Maribacter stanieri, and ‘Maribacter caenipelagi’ HD-44. The only isoprenoid quinone present within strain C3T was menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The G+C content of genomic DNA was 41.5 mol%. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and three unidentified lipids. The predominant cellular fatty acids (>5 % of the total fatty acids) were iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c). On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics, strain C3T represents a novel species of the genus Maribacter, for which the name Maribacter flavus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is C3T ( = KCTC 42508T = CGMCC 1.15112T).

The polar lipid content consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine and unidentified amino lipids and lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 46.4 mol% and the only respiratory quinone detected was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). Phylogenetic inference based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SC17T formed a distinct phyletic lineage within the family Flavobacteriaceae and was most closely related to members of the genera Gaetbulibacter and Tamlana with 95.0–95.8 % sequence similarity. On the basis of phenotypic and molecular features, strain SC17T represents a novel genus of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Aestuariibaculum suncheonense gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SC17T ( = KACC 16186T = JCM 17789T). Emended descriptions of the genera Gaetbulibacter and Tamlana are also proposed.

A Gram-reaction-negative, proteorhodopsin-containing, yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped, non-gliding and strictly aerobic bacterium, designated strain YIK12T, was isolated from tidal flat sediment of Yeongheung Island at the coast of the West Sea of Korea. Cells produced non-diffusible carotenoid pigments, but not flexirubin-type pigment. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate was affiliated to the family Flavobacteriaceae and showed highest similarity to Sediminibacter furfurosus MAOS-86T (93.3 %). Growth was observed at 24–44 °C (optimum 30 °C), at pH 6.5–8.0 (optimum 7.0) and in the presence of 1.5–7.0 % sea salts (optimum 2 %). The DNA G+C content was 40.4 mol% and the predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C16 : 0 3-OH, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6. On the basis of data from the present polyphasic taxonomic study, strain YIK12T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Hoppeia youngheungensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of H. youngheungensis is YIK12T ( = KCCM 43023T = JCM 19488T). Emended descriptions of the genus Sediminibacter and Sediminibacter furfurosus are given.

A novel bacterial strain designated Gsoil 616T was isolated from a soil sample of a ginseng field in Pocheon province (South Korea) and was characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. The isolate was Gram-positive, strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming and rod- or coccoid-shaped. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate belongs to the genus Nocardioides in the family Nocardioidaceae but was clearly separated from established species of this genus. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain Gsoil 616T and the type strains of Nocardioides species with validly published names ranged from 91.8 to 96.1 %. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 73 mol%. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data [major menaquinone MK-8(H4) and major fatty acid iso-C16 : 0] supported the affiliation of strain Gsoil 616T to the genus Nocardioides. However, the results of physiological and biochemical tests allowed phenotypic differentiation of the isolate from other Nocardioides species. Therefore, strain Gsoil 616T represented a novel species within the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides panacihumi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 616T (=KCTC 19187T =DSM 18660T).
