AbstractThe charge-discharge characteristics and the aging mechanism of PbO2 layers in contact with sulfuric acid solutions of different concentrations (1.5–5.0 M) were studied by using combined cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) techniques. For this purpose, thick lead dioxide layers were electrodeposited on gold substrate from aqueous solutions of Pb(NO3)2 dissolved in nitric acid. Based on the electrochemical and the mass change responses, it was found that in more concentrated solutions of H2SO4, the main reduction reaction was the transformation of lead dioxide to lead sulfate. However, in less concentrated sulfuric acid media, the transformation of lead dioxide to lead(II) ion became the main reaction. These Pb2+ ions transformed into lead sulfate crystals later by a chemical reaction. Because the electrochemical oxidation of lead sulfate is less favourable in sulfuric acid medium of higher concentrations, thus, PbO2 layers cannot be tested by continuous cyclization, which is necessary to study their aging parameters. Therefore, a delay step before each cyclic voltammogram was applied while the non-conductive lead sulfate dissolves or alternatively, by applying a pre-oxidation step prior to each cyclic voltammetry experiment to produce electrochemically significant amount of lead dioxide which can be reduced during the following negative potential sweep.

Abstract The charge-discharge characteristics and the aging mechanism of PbO2 layers doped with bismuth in contact with sulfuric acid solutions were studied by using combined cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) techniques. For this purpose, thick lead dioxide layers (non-doped and doped with Bi) were electrodeposited on gold substrate from aqueous solutions of Pb(NO3)2 dissolved in nitric acid and they were investigated in sulfuric acid media. Based on the electrochemical and the mass change responses, it is concluded that during the electrodeposition, bismuth influences the structure of the PbO2 formed. Bi(III) also inhibits the oxidation of lead sulfate and affects the reduction kinetics of lead dioxide. During successive cyclization (aging), the presence of bismuth accelerates the hydration of PbO2.

Purpose This paper aims to evaluate the inhibition efficiency of norfloxacin on the corrosion of copper in 1.0 M nitric acid and 0.5 M sulfuric acid solutions. Design/methodology/approach Evaluation was carried out by electrochemical techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization studies. Scanning electron microscopy was used, and it finally confirmed the existence of the adsorbed film. Findings The electrochemical measurements showed that norfloxacin has good inhibition efficiency on the corrosion of copper in 1.0 M nitric acid and 0.5 M sulfuric acid solutions. The inhibition action of norfloxacin in both of the corrosive media was observed to be of mixed type but with more of cathodic nature. The temperature dependence of the corrosion rate was studied in the temperature range from 35 to 55°C and the activation energy (Ea) was calculated. The adsorption of norfloxacin molecules on copper surface obeyed Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Studies on the potential of zero charge have been carried out to establish the mechanism of adsorption of the inhibitor onto the metal surface. The thermodynamic parameters such as the adsorption equilibrium constant (Kads) and the free energy of adsorption (ΔGads) were calculated. The value of free energy of adsorption very close to −40 kJmol−1 indicates that the adsorption is through electrostatic coulombic attraction and chemisorption. The decrease in value of Ea with the addition of inhibitor also shows the chemisorption of the inhibitor on the metal surface. Originality/value This paper indicates that norfloxacin can act as a good inhibitor for the corrosion of copper in both the acid media.

Anodic oxidation of the natural mineral chalcopyrite from the Bor ore deposit has been studied by cyclic voltammetry in pure sulfuric acid solutions. At the obtained voltammograms, the appearance of peaks at certain potential regions was identified and found to be much less pronounced than those previously reported in the literature. The voltammetric kinetic analysis confirmed that two-electron exchange electrochemical reactions occur. The explanation for this somewhat different electrochemical behavior of natural chalcopyrite compared to the concentrates widely used in studies of this mineral will also be given.

Abstract Although hydrogen sulfide is known to be highly corrosive to iron, it has been found that the presence of H2S actually enhances the inhibiting qualities of certain classes of organic compounds when employed as inhibitors of iron corrosion in sulfuric acid solutions. At the same time, the corrosivity of the hydrogen sulfide itself is eliminated and hydrogen embrittlement prevented. Certain other classes of organic compounds do not have these inhibiting qualities under similar conditions but instead tend to intensify attack by hydrogen sulfide. Experimental results, polarization curves for the systems tested, and sulfur adsorption measurements on iron provide preliminary information on the mechanism of the joint action of organic compounds and hydrogen sulfide on iron corrosion in acid media.
