AbstractIn this paper we introduce a novel family of Markov chains on the simple representations of SL2$\left ({\mathbb {F}_p}\right )$ F p in defining characteristic, defined by tensoring with a fixed simple module and choosing an indecomposable non-projective summand. We show these chains are reversible and find their connected components and their stationary distributions. We draw connections between the properties of the chain and the representation theory of SL2$\left ({\mathbb {F}_p}\right )$ F p , emphasising symmetries of the tensor product. We also provide an elementary proof of the decomposition of tensor products of simple SL2$\left ({\mathbb {F}_p}\right )$ F p -representations.

A deep result in the theory of W*-tensor products, the Commutation theorem, states that if M and N are W*-algebras faithfully represented as von Neumann algebras on the Hilbert spaces H and K, respectively, then the commutant in L(H ⊗ K) of the W*-tensor product of M and N coincides with the W*-tensor product of M′ and N′. Although special cases of this theorem were established successively by Misonou (2) and Sakai (3), the validity of the general result remained conjectural until the advent of the Tomita-Takesaki theory of Modular Hilbert algebras (6). As formulated, the Commutation theorem is a spatial result; that is, the W*-algebras in its statement are taken to act on specific Hilbert spaces. Not surprisingly, therefore, known proofs rely heavily on techniques of representation theory.

In Section 5 these are applied to the branching process, and give refinements of several well-known results. The last section deals with the semi-infinite random walk with an absorbing barrier at the origin.

The algebraic tensor product A1⊗A2 of two Banach algebras is an algebra in a natural way. There are certain norms α on this tensor product for which the multiplication is continuous so that the completion, A1αA2, is a Banach algebra. The representation theory of such tensor products is the subject of this paper. It will be shown that, under certain simple conditions, the tensor product of two semi-simple Banach algebras is semi-simple although, without these conditions, the result fails.

AbstractWe consider a strictly substochastic matrix or a stochastic matrix with absorbing states. By using quasi-stationary distributions we show that there is an associated canonical Markov chain that is built from the resurrected chain, the absorbing states, and the hitting times, together with a random walk on the absorbing states, which is necessary for achieving time stationarity. Based upon the 2-stringing representation of the resurrected chain, we supply a stationary representation of the killed and the absorbed chains. The entropies of these representations have a clear meaning when one identifies the probability measure of natural factors. The balance between the entropies of these representations and the entropy of the canonical chain serves to check the correctness of the whole construction.

Abstract In this note we study the probability and the mean time for absorption for discrete time Markov chains. In particular, we are interested in estimating the mean time for absorption when absorption is not certain and connect it with some other known results. Computing a suitable probability generating function, we are able to estimate the mean time for absorption when absorption is not certain giving some applications concerning the random walk. Furthermore, we investigate the probability for a Markov chain to reach a set A before reach B generalizing this result for a sequence of sets A 1 , A 2 , … , A k {A_{1},A_{2},\dots,A_{k}} .

Abstract Given Banach spaces X and Y, we ask about the dual space of the 𝒧(X, Y). This paper surveys results on tensor products of Banach spaces with the main objective of describing the dual of spaces of bounded operators. In several cases and under a variety of assumptions on X and Y, the answer can best be given as the projective tensor product of X ** and Y *.

Abstract Galego and Samuel showed that if K, L are metrizable, compact, Hausdorff spaces, then $C(K)\widehat{\otimes}_\pi C(L)$ is c0-saturated if and only if it is subprojective if and only if K and L are both scattered. We remove the hypothesis of metrizability from their result and extend it from the case of the twofold projective tensor product to the general n-fold projective tensor product to show that for any $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and compact, Hausdorff spaces K1, …, K n , $\widehat{\otimes}_{\pi, i=1}^n C(K_i)$ is c0-saturated if and only if it is subprojective if and only if each K i is scattered.

In a recent paper, the authors have discussed the concept of quasi-stationary distributions for absorbing Markov chains having a finite state space, with the further restriction of discrete time. The purpose of the present note is to summarize the analogous results when the time parameter is continuous.
