AbstractBased on the topological characteristics of small-world networks, a nonlinear sliding mode controller is designed to minimize the effects of internal parameter uncertainties. To qualify the effects of uncertain parameters in the response networks, some effective recognition rates are designed so as to achieve a steady value in the extremely fast simulation time period. Meanwhile, the Fisher-Kolmogorov and Burgers spatiotemporal chaotic systems are selected as the network nodes for constructing a drive and a response network, respectively. The simulation results confirm that the developed sliding mode could realize the effective synchronization problem between the spatiotemporal networks, and the outer synchronization is still achieved timely even when the connection probability of the small-world networks changes.

Abstract Networks that are organized as a hierarchy of modules have been the subject of much research, mainly focusing on algorithms that can extract this community structure from data. The question of why modular hierarchical (MH) organizations are so ubiquitous in nature, however, has received less attention. One hypothesis is that MH topologies may provide an optimal structure for certain dynamical processes. We revisit a MH network model that interpolates, using a single parameter, between two known network topologies: from strong hierarchical modularity to an Erdős–Rényi random connectivity structure. We show that this model displays a similar small-world effect as the Kleinberg model, where the connection probability between nodes decays algebraically with distance. We find that there is an optimal structure, in both models, for which the pair-averaged first passage time (FPT) and mean cover time of a discrete-time random walk are minimal, and provide a heuristic explanation for this effect. Finally, we show that analytic predictions for the pair-averaged FPT based on an effective medium approximation fail to reproduce these minima, which implies that their presence is due to a network structure effect.

The outer synchronization problem between two complex networks with nondelayed and time-varying delayed couplings via two different control schemes, namely, pinning control and impulsive control, is considered. Firstly, by applying pinning control to a fraction of the network nodes and using a suitable Lyapunov function, we obtain some new and useful synchronization criteria, which guarantee the outer synchronization between two complex networks. Secondly, impulsive control is added to the nodes of corresponding response network. Based on the generalized inequality about time-varying delayed different equation, the sufficient conditions for outer synchronization are derived. Finally, some examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the results obtained in this paper.

Understanding the interactions between the components of a system is key to understanding it. In complex systems, interactions are usually not uniform, not isotropic and not homogeneous: each interaction can be specific between elements.Networks are a tool for keeping track of who is interacting with whom, at what strength, when, and in what way. Networks are essential for understanding of the co-evolution and phase diagrams of complex systems. Here we provide a self-contained introduction to the field of network science. We introduce ways of representing and handle networks mathematically and introduce the basic vocabulary and definitions. The notions of random- and complex networks are reviewed as well as the notions of small world networks, simple preferentially grown networks, community detection, and generalized multilayer networks.

This paper considers the Mittag-Leffler projective synchronization problem of fractional-order coupled systems (FOCS) on the complex networks without strong connectedness by fractional sliding mode control (SMC). Combining the hierarchical algorithm with the graph theory, a new SMC strategy is designed to realize the projective synchronization between the master system and the slave system, which covers the globally complete synchronization and the globally anti-synchronization. In addition, some novel criteria are derived to guarantee the Mittag-Leffler stability of the projective synchronization error system. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the validity of the proposed method.

In order to effectively suppress horizontal vibration of the ultra-high-speed elevator car system. Firstly, considering the nonlinearity of guide shoe, parameter uncertainties, and uncertain external disturbances of the elevator car system, a more practical active control model for horizontal vibration of the 4-DOF ultra-high-speed elevator car system is constructed and the rationality of the established model is verified by real elevator experiment. Secondly, a predictive sliding mode controller based on adaptive fuzzy (PSMC-AF) is proposed to reduce the horizontal vibration of the car system, the predictive sliding mode control law is achieved by optimizing the predictive sliding mode performance index. Simultaneously, in order to decrease the influence of uncertainty of the car system, a fuzzy logic system (FLS) is designed to approximate the compound uncertain disturbance term (CUDT) on-line. Furthermore, the continuous smooth hyperbolic tangent function (HTF) is introduced into the sliding mode switching term to compensate the fuzzy approximation error. The adaptive laws are designed to estimate the error gain and slope parameter, so as to increase the robustness of the system. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted on some representative guide rail excitations and the results are compared to the existing solution and passive system. The analysis has confirmed the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed control method.
