This paper investigates the robust stabilization of the adaptive sliding mode control for a class of linear systems subjected to external disturbance via event-triggered communication (ETC) scheme. First, in order to reduce the bandwidth utilization, a discrete ETC scheme is proposed and the networked sliding mode function is derived using the ETC scheme. Based on the derived sliding mode function, a reduced-order networked sliding mode dynamics with communication delay is established. Second, by constructing a Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional (LKF), asymptotic stability and stabilization criteria of the reduced-order sliding mode dynamics are given in the form of linear matrix inequalities. According to the stabilization result, a novel event-triggered-based adaptive sliding mode controller is designed while guaranteeing the reachability of the sliding surface. Finally, simulation results illustrate the effectiveness and merit of the developed method.

The robustness issue of uncertain nonlinear systems’ control has attracted the attention of numerous researchers. In this paper, we propose three techniques to deal with the uncertain Hammerstein nonlinear model. First, a discrete sliding mode control (SMC) is developed, which is based on converting the original nonlinear system into a linearized one in the vicinity of the operating region using Taylor series expansion. However, the presence of relatively high nonlinearities and parameter variations leads to the deterioration of the desired performances. In order to overcome these problems and to improve the performance of classical SMC, we propose two solutions. The first one is based on the synthesis of a discrete SMC, taking into account the presence of nonlinearity. The second solution is a new discrete adaptive SMC for input–output Hammerstein model. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed controllers, a detailed robustness analysis is clearly developed. Simulation examples are reported at the end of the paper.

AbstractTo improve transportation capacity, dual overhead crane systems (DOCSs) are playing an increasingly important role in the transportation of large/heavy cargos and containers. Unfortunately, when trying to deal with the control problem, current methods fail to fully consider such factors as external disturbances, input dead zones, parameter uncertainties, and other unmodeled dynamics that DOCSs usually suffer from. As a result, dramatic degradation is caused in the control performance, which badly hinders the practical applications of DOCSs. Motivated by this fact, this paper designs a neural network-based adaptive sliding mode control (SMC) method for DOCS to solve the aforementioned issues, which achieves satisfactory control performance for both actuated and underactuated state variables, even in the presence of matched and mismatched disturbances. The asymptotic stability of the desired equilibrium point is proved with rigorous Lyapunov-based analysis. Finally, extensive hardware experimental results are collected to verify the efficiency and robustness of the proposed method.

Abstract This paper presents an energy efficient control strategy for electric vehicle (EV) driven by in-wheel-motors (IWMs) based on discrete adaptive sliding mode control (DASMC). The nonlinear vehicle model, tire model and the IWM model are established at first to represent the operation mechanism of the whole system. Based on the modeling, two virtual control variables are used to represent the longitudinal and yaw control efforts to coordinate the vehicle motion control. Then DASMC method is applied to calculate the required total driving torque and yaw moment, which can improve the tracking performance as well as the system robustness. According to the vehicle nonlinear model, the additional yaw moment can be expressed as a function of longitudinal and lateral tire forces. For further control scheme development, a tire force estimator using unscented Kalman filter is designed to estimate real-time tire forces. On these bases, energy efficient torque allocation method is developed to distribute the total driving torque and differential torque to each IWM, considering the motor energy consumption, the tire slip energy consumption and the brake energy recovery. Simulation results of the proposed control strategy using co-platform of Matlab/Simulink and CarSim® demonstrate that it can accomplish the vehicle motion control in a coordinated and economic way.

The sliding mode controller is one of the interesting classical nonlinear controllers in structural vibration control. From its apparition, in the middle of the twentieth century, this controller was a subject of several studies and investigations. This controller was widely used in the control of various semi-active or active devices in the civil engineering area. Nevertheless, the sliding mode controller offered a low sensitivity to the uncertainties or the system condition variations despite the presence of the Chattering defect. However, the adaptation law is one of the frequently used solutions to overcome this phenomenon offering the possibility to adapt the controller parameters according to the system variations and keeping the stability of the whole system assured. The chapter provides a sliding mode controller design reinforced by an adaptive law to control the desired state of an excited system. The performance of the adaptive controller is proved by numerical simulation results of a three-story excited structure.

A dynamic generalized regression neural network model based on inverse Duhem operator is proposed to characterize the rate-dependent hysteresis in piezoelectric actuators. As hysteresis is multi-valued mapping, and traditional neural network can only model the system with one-to-one mapping. An inverse Duhem operator is proposed to extract the dynamic property of the hysteresis. Moreover, it can transform the multi-valued mapping of the hysteresis into a one-to-one mapping to suit the input of neural network. In order to compensate the effect of the hysteresis in piezoelectric actuator, the adaptive sliding mode controller with a feedforward hysteresis compensator is developed for the tracking control of the piezoelectric actuator. Experimental results demonstrate superior tracking performance, which validate the practicability and effectiveness of the presented approach.

Magnetorheological elastomeric (MRE) material is a novel type of material that can adaptively change the rheological property rapidly, continuously, and reversibly when subjected to real-time external magnetic field. These new type of MRE materials can be developed by employing various schemes, for instance by mixing carbon nanotubes or acetone contents during the curing process which produces functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). In order to study the mechanical and magnetic effects of this material, for potential application in seismic isolation, in this paper, different mathematical models of magnetorheological elastomers are analyzed and modified based on the reported studies on traditional magnetorheological elastomer. In this regard, a new feature identification method, via utilizing curvelet analysis, is proposed to make a multi-scale constituent analysis and subsequently a comparison between magnetorheological elastomer nanocomposite and traditional magnetorheological elastomers in a microscopic level. Furthermore, by using this “smart” material as the laminated core structure of an adaptive base isolation system, magnetic circuit analysis is numerically conducted for both complete and incomplete designs. Magnetic distribution of different laminated magnetorheological layers is discussed when the isolator is under compressive preloading and lateral shear loading. For a proof of concept study, a scaled building structure is established with the proposed isolation device. The dynamic performance of this isolated structure is analyzed by using a newly developed reaching law sliding mode control and Radial Basis Function (RBF) adaptive sliding mode control schemes. Transmissibility of the structural system is evaluated to assess its adaptability, controllability and nonlinearity. As the findings in this study show, it is promising that the structure can achieve its optimal and adaptive performance by designing an isolator with this adaptive material whose magnetic and mechanical properties are functionally enhanced as compared with traditional isolation devices. The adaptive control algorithm presented in this research can transiently suppress and protect the structure against non-stationary disturbances in the real time.
