An aberration-free four-electrode lens is described for forming an ion beam for mass separators or spectrometers. The lens is a modification of the transaxial lens, in which the circular gaps between the electrodes are replaced by elliptical gaps. A lens converts an axially symmetric beam into a tape-type beam. The lens parameters are found using the phase diagram method. Using the same method, a new aberration corrector for electrostatic lenses and a new sector magnet aberration corrector are developed.

Kieserite (MgSO4·H2O) which has great application in recent years, was prepared according to the binary system MgSO4H2O at 80°C and the ternary system MgCl2MgSO4H2O at 25°C, 50°C and 75°C phase diagrams in this research. We reveal that the pure MgSO4·H2O is acquired in the ternary system MgCl2MgSO4H2O at 75°C with MgCl2 (23.966%~37.93%) for the equilibrium time 5~7days. The higher hydrated magnesium sulfate can be obtained in the ternary system with MgCl2 (0~34.52%) at 25°C, (0~35.684%) at 50°C, and (0~23.966%) at 75°C for 5~7days. These results are beneficial for the industrial production by converting MgSO4·7H2O and MgCl2·6H2O which are not fully exploited in salt pans into the useful MgSO4·H2O.

Phase equilibrium of the Mg-Al-Sn alloy system was calculated in detail by utilizing phase diagram calculation commercial package and other thermodynamic data for Mg alloys. The calculated phase diagrams were compared with the DSC results for the alloys of Mg-3wt%Al-3wt%Sn. The solidification and precipitation process of Mg-3wt%Al-Xwt%Sn were analyzed. The detailed comparison strongly supports the reliability of the selected thermodynamic description based on the results of thermodynamic calculation. It is clarified that when the Mg-Al-Sn alloy ends its solidification and cools down continuously, the phase Mg2Sn precipitated first from solid solution of magnesium, and then the Mg17Al12 phase precipitated at relative lower temperature. This is shown that the calculation phase diagram method considerably reduces the effort of alloy design and that the reliability of the results is high.

This study involves the stability of plastic flow of thermoviscoplastic materials. The general instability criterion is proposed for determining the onset conditions of instability and the transition conditions among various plastic deformation behaviors. By using the phase diagram method, the transition of material instability modes under complex loading conditions is described and the analytical results are further validated with numerical examples.
