This study aims to assess the impact of flash floods in the Wadi Nu’man basin on urban areas, east of Mecca, which are subjected to frequent floods, during the period from 1988–2019. By producing and analyzing the maps of the regions, an integrated approach to geomatics and hydraulic modelling is employed. The following maps are used: Flood-prone urbanity from 1988–2019, a flood risk map of Wadi Nu’man based on a risk matrix map, and a map of the proposed protection measures and alternatives in the study area. In order to achieve these goals, changes in the land use in the Wadi Nu’man basin were monitored by analyzing successive satellite images, taken by the US satellite, Landsat, in 1988, 1998, 2013, and 2019. Using a supervised classification, with the maximum likelihood method of ERDAS IMAGINE 2016, GIS was used in the production and analysis of soil maps, and geological and hydrological groups of drainage basins, as well as the hydrological model (HEC-HMS), were applied in calculating the hydrograph curve of the Wadi Nu’man basin. The flood water volumes and flow rates were estimated based on the SCS unit hydrograph, and the rain depth was analyzed and estimated for different periods. The hydraulic modeling program (HEC-RAS) was employed, when developing a two-dimensional model to calculate the speed, depth, and spread of the flood, in order to apply the risk matrix method. The recommendations based on this study give priority to the implementation of a flood prevention plan and the protection of infrastructure by maintaining the existing flood drainage facilities and establishing new drainage facilities to protect lives, property, and infrastructure.

Purpose The paper will present the case study of preventive and planned conservation applied to the Royal Villa and Park of Monza, which is one of the pilot projects within the general framework of Monza and Brianza Cultural District. Starting from an in-depth analysis of the Royal Villa, which represents a recent conservation and valorisation intervention developed by both public and private subjects, the purpose of this paper is to define an operative model for the management of complex properties, at communicating good practices for the maintenance of the built heritage and at identifying the priorities for the interventions. Design/methodology/approach The research project foresaw a first collection of data and information related to the previous conservation activities executed upon the case study, the design of a conservation plan in all its parts (technical handbook, conservation programme, economic budget, user handbook) through an information system dedicated to the conservation of built cultural heritage, and its fulfilment. In the meantime, a context analysis of the Royal Villa and Park of Monza was developed, with a specific attention to the diversified historical buildings located in the park. Findings The action research carried out has been evaluated in the framework of upstream perspective theories. This enabled to highlight the importance of an integrated approach; of the need of sharing the collection of data in order to set up evidence-based policies; and of the need to enhance the skills of involved professionals and decision makers. Originality/value A progress in protection measures, the understanding of conservation and valorisation as preventive activities, effectiveness of private business models for maintenance, dissemination of good practices, and creation of a network of local stakeholders.

The speedy degradation of rivers in the Kathmandu Valley has led to the failure of bridges, historical sites, and riverbanks. The present ad hoc practice of constructing protection measures has to be given a second thought. An integrated approach including engineering, legal, and social aspects can stop the speedy degradation of rivers. The proposed engineering measures include short-, medium-, and long-term stabilisation of the Chobhar Gorge including the construction of a series of check dams at a regular interval. The legal and other measures include banning sand extraction, construction of riverside road, preventing encroachment of floodplain, reducing sand demand, controlling the discharge of acidic effluents into the river, and creating awareness.

Watershed management is an integrated approach where a balanced utilization of land and water resources for optimal production with least menace to natural resources. Geospatial Technologies can be played an important role for the organization of various natural resources in a watershed. For sustainable development of land and water resources, the Andhra Pradesh State Government is implementing development of watershed programmes on priority basis. The watershed management activities include construction of rainwater harvesting structures, soil conservation measures and environmental protection measures (TAWDEVA). The selected watershed area was Kovvada Kalava Watershed which is a part of West Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh and was identified as drought and flood effected area because of sparse and variable rainfall. Collection of resource data includes digital imageries of study area for two seasons, Survey of India toposheets on 1:50000 scale, and other ancillary data / maps were conceded along with socio-economic data. The other datasets include levels of groundwater from concerned departments etc was collected. Various thematic maps on Settlements and Transport Network, Contours, Drainage Network, Slope, Geomorphology, Lithology, Structure and Land Use / Land Cover were generated by employing Arc GIS platform. After analyzing all maps integrated watershed analysis has been made aiming at generating sustainable developmental measures of land and water resources in the area.
