This study is aimed to analyze the thermal imaging patterns presented by infrared(IR) thermography at which the metal with internal defects are thermally heated. Through the knowledge of non-destructive testing which infrared thermography can be applied to detect the defects inside the materials, there are two materials experimented; one is stainless steel and the other is cast-iron. Thermally, each material of specimens is heated at the base of the material and kept with constant temperature, The artificial defects in the specimen are formulated. Under the shape and location of the defects, temperature profiles are also measured and validated using the computer simulation. It is concluded that the characteristics of thermal patterns obtained from IR thermography are consistent with those of measurement and computations.

To detect the delamination, disbond，inclusion defects of the glass fiber composite materials applied in the solid rocket motor, active infrared thermographic non-destructive testing(NDT) is researched. The samples including known defects are heated by pulsed high energy flash lamp. The surface temperature of the samples is monitored by infrared thermography camera. The results of the experiments show that the active infrared thermography technique is a fast and effective inspection method for detecting the defects of delamination, disbond，inclusion of the composites. The samples are also detected by underwater ultrasonic c-scans. The paper concludes that the active infrared thermography NDT is more suitable to rapidly detect the defect in large-area and the underwater ultrasonic c-scans is more suitable to quantitatively identify the defect in local-area.

Non-destructive testing using infrared thermography has been used in civil construction basically in situations involving electrical conductors or mechanical wear that normally generate heat. In the specific case of materials, the application of thermography to metal stud is well documented, but there are few reports in the literature covering thermography in concrete; these are usually limited to the inspection of cracks and to the localization of water infiltration in prefabricated concrete structures. The present report evaluates the potential of the active infrared thermography method in the detection of changes in the macrostructure of engineering cementitious composite, as well as in order to estimate its thermal performance. The results show that thermography is able to detect changes in the macrostructure and is sensitive to temperature differences among the constituents of concrete.
