AbstractThe optimization of production schedules to be more energy efficient while still meeting production goals is a difficult task: How to schedule and distribute production tasks to meet production goals, while making best use of fluctuating energy market prices and availability of locally installed energy sources? Although a large body of related work exists in this domain, most of those seem to focus on individual aspects and not the whole picture. In this paper, a genetic algorithm for optimization of production schedules with respect to energy consumption, peak shaving, and makespan is presented, that also takes into account that tasks can be performed in different ways, having different characteristics. The algorithm has been successfully employed within the SPEAR project by applying it for optimization of an automotive production line and for the pathway of an automated guided vehicle.

Aggregation of distributed generations (DGs) along with energy storage systems (ESSs) and controllable loads near power consumers has led to the concept of microgrids. However, the uncertain nature of renewable energy sources such as wind and photovoltaic generations, market prices and loads has led to difficulties in ensuring power quality and in balancing generation and consumption. To tackle these problems, microgrids should be managed by an energy management system (EMS) that facilitates the minimization of operational costs, emissions and peak loads while satisfying the microgrid technical constraints. Over the past years, microgrids’ EMS have been studied from different perspectives and have recently attracted considerable attention of researchers. To this end, in this paper a classification and a survey of EMSs has been carried out from a new point of view. EMSs have been classified into four categories based on the kind of the reserve system being used, including non-renewable, ESS, demand-side management (DSM) and hybrid systems. Moreover, using recent literature, EMSs have been reviewed in terms of uncertainty modeling techniques, objective functions (OFs) and constraints, optimization techniques, and simulation and experimental results presented in the literature.

The article considers the legal basis for the formation and development of the country's energy sector, in particular, the issue of energy production from renewable sources, among which the leading place belongs to wind energy. The tendencies of the world energy market, which minimize the negative impact on the environment, as well as the tendencies of development of this branch in Ukraine are investigated. It was stated that for our country wind energy is one of the strategic directions of development of the sector of alternative energy sources, given the high dependence of the country on imported energy, primarily natural gas, and significant potential for wind power, taking into account the location, climate and terrain. However, unfortunately, the pace of development of wind energy in Ukraine still lags significantly behind European ones. It is noted that the legislative provision of the use of wind energy in Ukraine as a source of alternative energy is characterized primarily by the number of bylaws, general declarative legislation, as well as some inconsistencies in legal regulation. An analysis of current legislation and a number of regulations governing the development of the industry in general and wind energy in particular. A review of the norms that relate purely to the issues of the research area and their features and direction of legal regulation. In addition, it was stressed that Ukraine's accession to European initiatives, as well as borrowing international experience in this area should positively affect the energy balance and ensure the development of the sector, in particular, in the light of the need to create a full competitive environment in Ukraine's energy market; changes in heat generation by renewable energy sources and the full transformation of coal regions, which means the gradual closure of unprofitable enterprises with the parallel creation of alternative jobs in these regions.

Inorganic-biological hybrid systems have potential to be sustainable, efficient, and versatile chemical synthesis platforms by integrating the light-harvesting properties of semiconductors with the synthetic potential of biological cells. We have developed a modular bioinorganic hybrid platform that consists of highly efficient light-harvesting indium phosphide nanoparticles and genetically engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a workhorse microorganism in biomanufacturing. The yeast harvests photogenerated electrons from the illuminated nanoparticles and uses them for the cytosolic regeneration of redox cofactors. This process enables the decoupling of biosynthesis and cofactor regeneration, facilitating a carbon- and energy-efficient production of the metabolite shikimic acid, a common precursor for several drugs and fine chemicals. Our work provides a platform for the rational design of biohybrids for efficient biomanufacturing processes with higher complexity and functionality.
