The question of the influence of state ownership in Russian companies on their capital structure remains open for further discussion and the conclusion has not been drawn yet. The results of the work carried out for the Russian market indicate a significant role of state participation in Russian companies [4], as well as the fact that Russian companies with state participation have significantly higher values of debt in the capital structure than private ones [33]. In this publication, to assess the role of state participation in the capital structure of Russian companies, an empirical analysis of 139 public companies for 2014-2018 was carried out. (sample presented by state and private companies) listed on the Moscow Stock Exchange. n this study, it was revealed that domestic public state-owned companies, other things being equal, have a higher value of debt in the capital structure than private ones. In addition, companies with state participation also have higher values of the ratio of long-term liabilities in comparison with private ones. This confirms the hypothesis that the activities of state-owned companies are associated with greater financial risks than private ones, especially in the long term. In this situation, it is reasonable to introduce a policy aimed at increasing the financial stability of state-owned companies, namely, to carry out activities to expand production processes at the expense of their own funds and retained earnings, and not at the expense of borrowed funds. We also obtained a positive significant influence on the capital structure of companies with state participation of such factors as the size of the company, profitability of sales, return on equity, negative influence of such determinants as the value of net assets, the asset turnover ratio, the ratio of operating expenses to EBITDA, return on assets.

Purpose This study aims to examine some of the commonly proposed deviants associated with the banking industry in the context of the capital structure puzzle. The paper considers the role of guarantees, information asymmetry and other frictional factors in the context of modern financial markets and examines whether these factors deserve special consideration in solving the capital structure puzzle for banks. Design/methodology/approach The authors adopt the argumentation theory model proposed by Toulmin (1958) as the methodological approach in this paper. Findings The findings from this paper demonstrate that any solution to the capital structure puzzle, whenever available, will also solve the capital structure puzzle for banks without additional efforts. The focus of future research should be on solving the generic capital structure puzzle for a universal set of firms rather than focusing on the banking industry as a subset with unique features. Originality/value The paper adopts a novel methodological approach offered by argumentation theory to pursue the enquiry. To the best of the knowledge, this paper is the first paper in the finance literature that uses argumentation theory to develop a theoretical construct. The finding from this study offers guidance for the proliferation of research paradigms in the capital structure puzzle.

Effective financial management and optimal capital structure are important for companies to obtain better operational performance. The purpose of this study is the review of the most important theories in terms of optimal financial structure and to explore the most important factors affecting decisions in that area. A bad decision about the capital structure may lead to financial lack of balance and even to bankruptcy. There are many alternative theories on how to build optimal capital structures, which, as indicated by practice, may occur to be insufficient. There is no significant studies that clearly indicate the determinants of a particular solution in the financial structure of companies, especially those referred to as startup companies, mainly because of specifics of that group of companies. It is not possible to indicate which of the leading approaches to the capital structure more fully describes the decisions of start‑ups as to the financing structure. Nevertheless, the results indicate that managers of companies often include similar decisions competitors and modulate the policy of his company within the capital structure for a particular, market standard, which is confirmed by Abdulsaleh and Worthington.
