Abstract The aim of the work was to investigate how the size of Ni and Cu-supported nanoparticles influence their activity in an oxidative steam reforming of methanol. The size of metal particles was controlled by the initial introduction or elimination of oxygen-containing groups on the surface of carbon nanotubes. The results of the activity tests showed that catalysts with the smallest metal nanoparticles were the least active since they easily underwent oxidation during the process.

Herein, we report monometallic Ni and bimetallic Pd–Ni catalysts supported on CeO2–Al2O3 binary oxide which are highly active and selective in oxy-steam reforming of methanol (OSRM). Monometallic and bimetallic supported catalysts were prepared by an impregnation method. The physicochemical properties of the catalytic systems were investigated using a range of methods such as: Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR–H2), Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD–NH3), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM–EDS). We demonstrate that the addition of palladium facilitates the reduction of nickel catalysts. The activity tests performed for all catalysts confirmed the promotion effect of palladium on the catalytic activity of nickel catalyst and their selectivity towards hydrogen production. Both nickel and bimetallic palladium–nickel supported catalysts showed excellent stability during the reaction. The reported catalytic systems are valuable to make advances in the field of fuel cell technology.

Herein, we report about the monometallic Ni and bimetallic Pd-Ni catalysts supported on CeO2-Al2O3 binary oxide, which were investigated in oxy-steam reforming of methanol (OSRM). Monometallic and bimetallic supported catalysts were prepared by wet aqueous impregnation and subsequent impregnation method, respectively. The physicochemical properties of the catalytic systems were investigated using various methods such as: BET, XRD, TPR-H2, TPD-NH3, XPS and SEM-EDS techniques. It has been proven that the addition of palladium to the nickel catalyst facilitates its reduction. The activity tests performed for all catalysts confirmed the promotion effect of palladium on catalytic activity of nickel catalyst and selectivity towards hydrogen production. Both nickel and bimetallic palladium-nickel supported catalysts showed excellent stability during the reaction. Such catalytic systems are valuable for the advance of the field of fuel cell technology.

ABSTRACTThe goal of this research is to investigate the activities of a non-noble nano-catalyst (Ni/SiO2) using Si-microreactors for steam reforming of methanol to produce hydrogen for fuel cells. The supported catalyst was synthesized by sol-gel method using Ni (II) salts and Si(C2H5O)4 as starting materials. EDX results indicate that the actual loading of Ni (5-6%) is lower than the intended loading of 12 %. The specific surface area of the silica sol-gel encapsulated Ni nano-catalyst is 452 m2/g with an average pore size of ∼ 3 nm. Steam reforming reactions have been carried out in a microreactor with 50 µm channels in the temperature range of 180-240 °C and atmospheric pressure. Results show 53% conversion of methanol with a selectivity of 74 % to hydrogen at 5 l/min and 200 °C. The magnetic properties of the catalysts were performed using a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) to study the activity of the catalysts before and after the steam reforming reactions. The VSM results indicate much higher activity in the microreactor compared to macro-reactor and Ni forms non-ferromagnetic species faster in the microreactor.

Clean power source utilizing vast logistic fuel reserves (jet fuels, diesel, and coal) would be the main driver in the 21st century for high efficiency. Fuel processors are required to convert these fuels into hydrogen-rich reformate for extended periods in the presence of sulfur, and deliver hydrogen with little or no sulfur to the fuel cell stack. However, the jet and other logistic fuels are invariably sulfur-laden. Sulfur poisons and deactivates the reforming catalyst and therefore, to facilitate continuous uninterrupted operation of logistic fuel processors, robust sulfur-tolerant catalysts ought to be developed. New noble metal-supported ceria-based sulfur-tolerant nanocatalysts were developed and thoroughly characterized. In this paper, the performance of single metal-supported catalysts in the steam-reforming of kerosene, with 260 ppm sulfur is highlighted. It was found that ruthenium-based formulation provided an excellent balance between hydrogen production and stability towards sulfur, while palladium-based catalyst exhibited rapid and steady deactivation due to the highest propensity to sulfur poisoning. The rhodium supported system was found to be most attractive in terms of high hydrogen yield and long-term stability. A mechanistic correlation between the role of the nature of the precious metal and the support for generating clean desulfurized -rich reformate is discussed.
