The edible mushroom industry has grown significantly in recent years due to the dietary change and the demand for heathy food. However, the spent mushroom compost (SMC) will be produced in large quantities after the harvest, thus forming an agricultural waste requiring proper management other than dumping or burning. In this work, two types of SMCs with the cultivation of shiitake fungus (SF) and black fungus (BF) were converted into porous biochar products (a series of SMC-SF-BC and SMC-BF-BC) at higher pyrolysis temperatures (i.e., 400, 600 and 800 °C) based on their thermochemical characteristics, using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The pore and chemical properties of the resulting products, including surface area, pore volume, average pore size, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), were studied to correlate them with the most important process parameter. The results showed that the pore properties of the biochar products indicated a significant increase with the increase in the pyrolysis temperature from 400 to 600 °C. The data on the maximal Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area for the biochar products produced at 800 °C (i.e., SMC-SF-BC-800 and SMC-BF-BC-800) were found to be 312.5 and 280.9 m2/g, respectively. Based on the EDS and FTIR, plenty of oxygen-containing functional groups were found on the surface of the resulting biochar products.

Abstract To cater to the application in various micro/nano devices, this paper reports a compatible and efficient approach combining electrodeposition and dealloying to fabricate bi-continuous nanoporous copper films. In the electrodeposition step, effect of concentration ratio of different ions, pH of the solution and cathode current density on the elementary composition and microscopic morphology of the deposited alloy are systematically investigated, obtaining an optimum condition with good stability and process compatibility. A uniform copper-zinc alloy with its zinc content improved to ~67 at.% is prepared under this condition. A uniform nanoporous copper with an average pore size of 150 nm is fabricated by ultrasonic assisted dealloying whose efficiency is significantly improved compared to free dealloying. This method is promising to be used in the mass production of nanoporous copper films, benefiting researches on various practical applications in micro/nano devices.

Abstract Constructing a novel nanocomposite structure based on Co3O4 is of the current interest to design and develop efficient electrochemical capacitors. The capacitive performance of MoO3@Co3O4 nanocomposite is compared with pristine Co3O4 nanoparticles, both of them being synthesized by hydrothermal technique. A BET surface area of ~41 m2g-1 (almost twice that of Co3O4 )and average pore size of 3.6 nm is found to be suitable for promoting Faradaic reactions in the nanocomposite. Electrochemical measurements conducted on both samples predict capacitive behavior with quasi-reversible redox reactions. MoO3@Co3O4 nanocomposite is capable of delivering a superior specific capacitance of 1248 Fg-1 at 0.5 Ag-1 along with notable stability of 92% even after 2000 cycles of charge-discharge and Coulombic efficiency approaching 100% at 10 Ag-1. The outstanding results obtained in this work assure functional adequacy of MoO3@Co3O4 nanocomposite in fabricating high-performance electrochemical capacitors.

In the current paper, we fabricated, characterized, and applied nanocomposite hydrogel based on alginate (Alg) and nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) loaded with phenolic purified extracts from the aerial part of Linum usitatissimum (LOH) as the bone tissue engineering scaffold. nHA was synthesized based on the wet chemical technique/precipitation reaction and incorporated into Alg hydrogel as the filler via physical cross-linking. The characterizations (SEM, DLS, and Zeta potential) revealed that the synthesized nHA possess a plate-like shape with nanometric dimensions. The fabricated nanocomposite has a porous architecture with interconnected pores. The average pore size was in the range of 100–200 µm and the porosity range of 80–90%. The LOH release measurement showed that about 90% of the loaded drug was released within 12 h followed by a sustained release over 48 h. The in vitro assessments showed that the nanocomposite possesses significant antioxidant activity promoting bone regeneration. The hemolysis induction measurement showed that the nanocomposites were hemocompatible with negligible hemolysis induction. The cell viability/proliferation confirmed the biocompatibility of the nanocomposites, which induced proliferative effects in a dose-dependent manner. This study revealed the fabricated nanocomposites are bioactive and osteoactive applicable for bone tissue engineering applications.

In this work, feather keratin was extracted from the waste feather of chicken via alkyd pretreatment and reduction method, the extraction rate is above 85%. The molecular weight and aggregation morphology of feather keratin in an aqueous environment were characterized by 18-angle laser light scattering gel permeation chromatography and field emission transmission electron microscopy. The relationship between the structure and properties of feather keratin is discussed. The 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) -3-ethylcarbondiimide hydrochloride and N-hydroxysuccinimide were used as activation system and cross-linkage. The gallic acid was used as modification reagent and was bonded to feather keratin chains; meanwhile, feather keratin chains were cross-linked through covalent bonds obtained the novel adsorbent (named as GA-FK gel). The GA-FK gel was investigated by IR, SEM, TGA, XRD, and BET methods. The results indicated that GA molecules successfully bonded to feather keratin chains and cross-linked between feather keratin chains. The GA-FK gel was found to have a three-dimensional network structure with abundant mesopores. Its pore size range is 1.8~90 nm; average pore size is 19.6 nm. Its specific surface area is 7.17 m2·g−1. In addition, GA-FK gel was applied to remove Fe(III) in water. The maximum adsorption capacity was 319.0 mg·g−1. The adsorption process of GA-FK gel to Fe(III) presents a typical two-stage pattern accompanied with swelling. The adsorption kinetics of GA-FK gel to Fe(III) follows the quasi-second-order model, the adsorption isotherm follows the Freundlich model. Therefore, the adsorption mechanism is non-specific adsorption.

In this work, the efficiency of the adsorptive removal of the organic cationic dye methylene blue (MB) from polluted water was examined using three materials: natural clay (zeolite), Zn-Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH), and zeolite/LDH composite. These materials were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) diffraction (XRF), low-temperature N2 adsorption, pore volume and average pore size distribution and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The properties of the applied nanomaterials regarding the adsorption of MB were investigated by determining various experimental parameters, such as the contact time, initial dye concentration, and solution pH. In addition, the adsorption isotherm model was estimated using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm models. The Langmuir model was the best-fitting for all applied nanomaterials. In addition, the kinetics were analyzed by using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models, and the pseudo-second-order model was an apparent fit for all three applied nanomaterials. The maximum Adsorption capacity toward MB obtained from the materials was in the order zeolite/LDH composite > zeolites > Zn-Fe LDH. Thus, the zeolite/LDH composite is an excellent adsorbent for the removal of MB from polluted water.

Abstract The changes in the surface area of titanium samples occurring during induction heat treatment (IHT) were studied. The dependence of the surface area of titanium samples on the exposure temperature was revealed. When a titanium sample was heated to a temperature of 1000 °C in the air at an exposure time of 60 s, there was a 45-fold area increase. The assessment of the porosity of the formed coating is carried out. The number of pores increased with increasing temperature from 374 to 1029 pieces. Accordingly, the average pore size decreased by 40%.

Porous nanocomposites based on PrFeO3-TiO2 were synthesized using the glycine-nitrate combustion method with different values of mass content of TiO2 (0–7.5 %) and subsequent heat treatment in air. The results of X-ray phase analysis and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of ultradispersed TiO2, structurally close to that of anatase. The morphology, specific surface area, and porous structure of the obtained powders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and adsorption-structural analysis, the results of which showed that the samples had a foam-like mesoporous structure. The specific surface area and the average pore size were in the ranges of 7.6–17.8 m2/g and 7.2–15.2 nm, respectively, and varied depending on the TiO2 content. The optical properties of the nanocomposites were studied by UV-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy, the energy of the band gap was calculated as 2.11–2.26 eV. The photocatalytic activity of PrFeO3‑TiO2 nanocomposites was investigated in the process of photo-Fenton-like degradation of methyl violet under the action of visible light. It was shown that the maximum reaction rate constant was 0.095 min-1, which is ten times higher than the value for the known orthoferrite-based analogs. The obtained photocatalysts were also characterized by their high cyclic stability. Based on the studies carried out, the obtained porous PrFeO3-TiO2 nanocomposites can be considered to be apromising basis for photocatalysts applied in advanced oxidative processes of aqueous media purification from organic pollutants.

This work reports on the production of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) using N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent and water as non-solvent. The influence of the processing conditions in the morphology, surface characteristics, structure, thermal and mechanical properties were evaluated for polymer dissolution temperatures between 25 and 150 °C and conditioning time between 0 and 10 min. Finger-like pore morphology was obtained for all membranes and increasing the polymer dissolution temperature led to an increase in the average pore size (≈0.9 and 2.1 µm), porosity (≈50 to 90%) and water contact angle (up to 80°), in turn decreasing the β PVDF content (≈67 to 20%) with the degree of crystallinity remaining approximately constant (≈56%). The conditioning time did not significantly affect the polymer properties studied. Thus, the control of NIPS parameters proved to be suitable for tailoring PVDF membrane properties.
