AbstractThe number of users approaching the world of cryptocurrencies exploded in the last years, and consequently the daily interactions on their underlying distributed ledgers have intensified. In this paper, we analyze the flow of these digital transactions in a certain period of time, trying to discover important insights on the typical use of these technologies by studying, through complex network theory, the patterns of interactions in four prominent and different Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs), namely Bitcoin, DogeCoin, Ethereum, Ripple. In particular, we describe the Distributed Ledger Network Analyzer (DiLeNA), a software tool for the investigation of the transactions network recorded in DLTs. We show that studying the network characteristics and peculiarities is of paramount importance, in order to understand how users interact in the DLT. For instance, our analyses reveal that all transaction graphs exhibit small world properties.

In recent years, while many research proposals have been made toward novel algorithmic solutions of a myriad of web services composition problems, their validation has been less than satisfactory. One of the reasons for this problem is the lack of real benchmark web services data with which researchers can test and verify their proposals. In this chapter, to remedy this challenge, we present a novel benchmark toolkit, WSBen, which is capable of generating synthetic web services data with diverse scenarios and configurations using complex network theory. Web services researchers therefore can evaluate their web services discovery and composition algorithms in a more systematic fashion. The development of WSBen is inspired by our preliminary study on real-world web services crawled from the Web. The proposed WSBen can: (1) generate a collection of synthetic web services files in the WSDL format conforming to diverse complex network characteristics; (2) generate queries and ground truth sets for testing discovery and composition algorithms; (3) prepare auxiliary files to help further statistical analysis; (4) convert WSDL test sets to the formats that conventional AI planners can read; and (5) provide a graphical interface to control all these functions. To illustrate the application of the WSBen, in addition, we present case studies selected from three domains: (1) web services composition; (2) AI planning; and (3) the laws of networks in Physics community. Military SoS increasingly shows its relation of complex network. According to complex network theory, we construct a SoS network topology model for network warfare simulation. Analyzing statistical parameters of the model, it is concluded that the topology model has small-world, high-aggregation and scale-free properties. Based on this model we mainly simulate and analyze vulnerability of the network. And this provides basis for analysis of the robustness and vulnerability of real battle SoS network.

Relationship between nodes in peer-to-peer overlay, currently becomes a hot topic in the field of complex network. In this paper a model of peer-to-peer overlay was purposed. And then the paper focused on figuring out the mean-shortest path length (MSPL), clustering coefficient (CC) and the degree of every node which allowed us to discover the degree distribution. The results show that the degree distribution function follows approximately power law distribution and the network possesses notable clustering and small-world properties.

Abstract. Network theory is applied to an array of streamflow gauges located in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia (BC) and Yukon, Canada. The goal of the analysis is to assess whether insights from this branch of mathematical graph theory can be meaningfully applied to hydrometric data, and, more specifically, whether it may help guide decisions concerning stream gauge placement so that the full complexity of the regional hydrology is efficiently captured. The streamflow data, when represented as a complex network, have a global clustering coefficient and average shortest path length consistent with small-world networks, which are a class of stable and efficient networks common in nature, but the observed degree distribution did not clearly indicate a scale-free network. Stability helps ensure that the network is robust to the loss of nodes; in the context of a streamflow network, stability is interpreted as insensitivity to station removal at random. Community structure is also evident in the streamflow network. A network theoretic community detection algorithm identified separate communities, each of which appears to be defined by the combination of its median seasonal flow regime (pluvial, nival, hybrid, or glacial, which in this region in turn mainly reflects basin elevation) and geographic proximity to other communities (reflecting shared or different daily meteorological forcing). Furthermore, betweenness analyses suggest a handful of key stations which serve as bridges between communities and might be highly valued. We propose that an idealized sampling network should sample high-betweenness stations, small-membership communities which are by definition rare or undersampled relative to other communities, and index stations having large numbers of intracommunity links, while retaining some degree of redundancy to maintain network robustness.

Seismic activities show a space-time symmetry in some research. They have been recently studied using complex network theory. Earthquake network similarity is studied by us from seismic catalogs in the same region for a given period of time. In this paper, we first calculate the distance between feature vectors which represent the topological properties of different networks. A hierarchical clustering of earthquake networks in the same region is shown by using this method. It is found that similar networks are not the networks of adjacent years but those with decades time difference. To study the period of similar earthquake networks in the same region, we use wavelet analysis to obtain the possible periods at different time scales of the regions of the world, California and Japan. It is found that some of the possible periods are consistent with the results which have been already found by seismologists. The study of similar seismic activities from the perspective of the complex network will help seismologists to study the law of earthquake occurrence in a new way, which may provide possible research thinking for earthquake prediction.

Accidents have occurred periodically in the tailings ponds where mine solid waste is stored in recent years, and thus their safety has become one of the constraints restricting the sustainable development of the mining industry. Reclamation is an important way to treat tailings ponds, but improper reclamation methods and measures not only cannot reduce the accident risk of tailings ponds, but will further increase the pollution to the surrounding environment. The influencing factors of reclamation accidents in tailings ponds are complex, and the existing models cannot characterize them. In order to study the propagation process of tailings pond reclamation risk, this paper proposes a three-dimensional identification framework for accident hazards based on evidence (TDIFAHE) to identify all potential hazards that may occur during the reclamation stage, and obtain a list of hazards. Based on the complex network theory, this paper uses identified hazards as network nodes and the correlation between hazards as the edges of the network. Based on the identified hazard data, the evolution network of reclamation risk in tailings ponds (ENRRTP) is constructed. By analyzing the statistical characteristics of ENRRTP, it can be found that ENRRTP has small world and scale-free characteristics. The above characteristics show that the reclamation risk of tailings ponds is coupled with multiple factors and the disaster path is short. Giving priority to those hub hazards that have a dominant impact on the reclamation risk can significantly reduce the reclamation risk of the tailings pond.

Logistics systems can be abstracted to complex networks which are composed of logistics nodes and transport routes. The structure and geometric properties of the complex network has an important impact on the logistics industry development and management. The article use a provinces logistics network as the prototype and build a complex network. Apply complex network theory to analyze the logistics network. The article found that the logistics network has small-world properties. Also, the article discussed the important nodes based on the statistical indictors. Finally, compare the results with the real planning nodes level.

In this paper, 2112 specific correlation data of 2 types cluster were selected as sample to build a weighted network, including each hour sample is represented by a vertex and a correlation between 2 clusters is represented by an edge. We analysis this network structure by complex network theory and computer method. We found that the correlation clusters of 2 media have an important impact on this complex network, and the specific sample follow a frequency distribution of the weighted degrees. Applying the method of k-core shows small groups in this complex network, also the modularity calculating help us find out the key cluster, the correlation cluster, the medium cluster and the interaction path of them. An apparently small-world effect has found by the shortest path calculating effectively. All of these may provide a scientific and reasonable reference for further research.

Taking Baidu search index as the data source, this research collects yoga-related data in various provinces in China, analyzes the public’s attention to yoga on the Internet from the perspective of the complex network theory, so as to dig out characteristics of those who are interested in yoga as well as the temporal and spatial change of yoga attention from 2011 to 2020. Then, by transforming the time series into a network through the VG model and HVG model, the paper analyzes the network characteristics and predicts the popularity of yoga. Furthermore, the publicity of yoga and the public’s attention to it are analyzed, considering the policy, national education level, the influence of TV, mobile phone and other communication equipment, so as to help the market to provide corresponding products and services in a targeted manner and to promote the healthy development of the yoga industry.
