The Stability

A liquid bridge formed between two coaxial, circular, solid disks was vibrated to study the effects of small vibrations on the stability of a free surface of the liquid bridge. The liquid bridge was vibrated by tapping its upper disk and by using a motor placed nearby. Experiments were conducted for isothermal liquid bridges of silicone oil (5 cSt) with a disk diameter of 7.0 mm. By subjecting the liquid bridge to small vibrations, the characteristics of vibration-induced surface oscillation have been clearly determined.

AbstractSystems of solid particles in suspension driven by a time-periodic flow tend to create structures in the carrier fluid that are reminiscent of highly regular geometrical items. Within such a line of inquiry, the present study provides numerical results in support of the space experiments JEREMI (Japanese and European Research Experiment on Marangoni flow Instabilities) planned for execution onboard the International Space Station. The problem is tackled by solving the unsteady non-linear governing equations for the same conditions that will be established in space (microgravity, 5 cSt silicone oil and different aspect ratios of the liquid bridge). The results reveal that for a fixed supporting disk radius, the dynamics are deeply influenced by the height of the liquid column. In addition to its expected link with the critical threshold for the onset of instability (which makes Marangoni flow time-periodic), this geometrical parameter can have a significant impact on the emerging waveform and therefore the topology of particle structures. While for shallow liquid bridges, pulsating flows are the preferred mode of convection, for tall floating columns the dominant outcome is represented by rotating fluid-dynamic disturbance. In the former situation, particles self-organize in circular sectors bounded internally by regions of particle depletion, whereas in the latter case, particles are forced to accumulate in a spiral-like structure. The properties of some of these particle attractors have rarely been observed in earlier studies concerned with fluids characterized by smaller values of the Prandtl number.

Nano-fluid flooding is a new method capable of improving oil recovery; however, nanoparticles (NPs) significantly affect electric dehydration, which has rarely been investigated. The effect of silica (SiO2) NPs on the droplet–interface coalescence was investigated using a high-speed digital camera under an electric field. The droplet experienced a fall, coalescence, and secondary droplet formation. The results revealed that the oil–water interfacial tension and water conductivity changed because of the SiO2 NPs. The decrease of interfacial tension facilitated droplet deformation during the falling process. However, with the increase of particle concentration, the formed particle film inhibited the droplet deformation degree. Droplet and interface are connected by a liquid bridge during coalescence, and the NP concentration also resulted in the shape of this liquid bridge changing. The increase of NP concentration inhibited the horizontal contraction of the liquid bridge while promoting vertical collapse. As a result, it did not facilitate secondary droplet formation. Moreover, the droplet falling velocity decreased, while the rising velocity of the secondary droplet increased. Additionally, the inverse calculation of the force balance equation showed that the charge of the secondary droplet also increased. This is attributed to nanoparticle accumulation, which resulted in charge accumulation on the top of the droplet.
