In the paper, the influence of material model selection on the behaviour of Finite Element model of a compressed thin-walled channel is studied. Results of three material models of channels of two different lengths and two types of geometric imperfections are compared and discussed.

A finite element model is proposed for numerical analysis of mechanical properties of precast segmental concrete test beam with external tendons. The 3D finite element model of test beam is established by SOLID65 element in ANSYS software, while the dry joint between segments is simulated by contact element, and the attachment between concrete beam and external prestressed tendons is achieved by node coupling method. Numerical simulation analysis reveals structural behavior, stress variations and crack opening cases of joints of the test beam by considering the concrete material and geometric nonlinearity. Influencing factors of the bending mechanical properties of the test beam are researched with different tendon types, secondary effect of external tendons and external tendon slip at deviation. Results of the numerical analysis reveal that the segmental joints are in the compressive state below the 300kN.Crack opening is the key factor of the mechanical properties of the test beam above the 300kN.The results can be used for structural design of precast segmental bridge.

ABSTRACT Being able to estimate tire/rubber friction is very important to tire engineers, materials developers, and pavement engineers. This is because of the need for estimating forces generated at the contact, optimizing tire and vehicle performance, and estimating tire wear. Efficient models for contact area and interfacial separation are key for accurate prediction of friction coefficient. Based on the contact mechanics and surface roughness, various models were developed that can predict real area of contact and penetration depth/interfacial separation. In the present work, we intend to compare the analytical contact mechanics models using experimental results and numerical analysis. Nano-indentation experiments are performed on the rubber compound to obtain penetration depth data. A finite element model of a rubber block in contact with a rough surface was developed and validated using the nano-indentation experimental data. Results for different operating conditions obtained from the developed finite element model are compared with analytical model results, and further model improvements are discussed.

Purpose. The article examines the effect on the stress-strain state of the parameters of the finite-element model created in the “Lira” software package in a numerical analysis of non-circular outlined tunnels. Methodology To achieve this goal, the authors developed finite element models of the calotte part of the mine during the construction of a double track railway tunnel using “Lira” software. In each of the models in the “Lira” software package, the interaction zone with temporary fastening was sampled in a specific way. After creation of models, their numerical analysis with the detailed research of his results was conducted. Findings. In the finite element models, the values of deformations and stresses in the horizontal and vertical axes, as well as the maximum values of the moments and longitudinal forces in the temporary fastening were obtained. A comparative analysis of the obtained values of the components of the stress-strain state with a change in the parameters of the finite element model was carried out. The graphs of the laws of these results from the discretization features of the two models were plotted. The third finite element model with a radial meshing in the zone of interaction of temporary support with the surrounding soil massif was investigated. Originality It has been established that in the numerical analysis of the SSS of a tunnel lining of a non-circular outline, its results substantially depend on the shape, size and configuration of the applied finite elements, on the size of the computational area of the soil massif, and also on the conditions for taking into account the actual (elastic or plastic) behavior of the soil massif.  Practical value. The features of discretization and the required dimensions of the computational area of the soil massif were determined when modeling the “lining – soil massif” system, which provide sufficient accuracy for calculating the parameters of the stress-strain state of the lining.
