AbstractLaser cutting of intrusive rocks, including granite, gabbro, and diorite, is carried out in order to assess the cut characteristics through geometrical measurements, such as kerf width, melting width, and penetration depth. The absorption rate for each specimen at the wavelength of 1064 nm is measured using a spectrophotometer. A multimode fiber laser is used in this study with the power of 9 kW and different cutting speeds. Furthermore, nitrogen gas at 13 bar is applied as the assistant gas in order to remove the melted material effectively. As a result of the experiment, the relationship between the cutting speed and geometrical measurements is investigated. Furthermore, variations of penetration depth are performed in accordance with the number of laser cuts. In addition, through energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) element mapping, minerals that comprise the rocks are classified and characterized. Subsequently, the changes in the microstructure and chemical composition of each specimen, before and after laser cutting, are compared using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and EDX analyses. Experimental results demonstrate that the cutting characteristics vary, depending on the types of minerals that make up the rock. Based on a series of tests, it is identified that volume energy of more than 3.06E + 13 $$\mathrm{J}/{\mathrm{m}}^{3}$$ J / m 3 is required to fully cut intrusive rocks that have a thickness of 25 mm.

AbstractDeep-penetration laser beam welding is highly dynamic and affected by many parameters. Several investigations using differently sized laser spots, spot-in-spot laser systems, and multi-focus optics show that the intensity distribution is one of the most influential parameters; however, the targeted lateral and axial intensity design remains a major challenge. Therefore, a laser processing optic has been developed that coaxially combines two separate laser sources/beams with different beam characteristics and a measuring beam for optical coherence tomography (OCT). In comparison to current commercial spot-in-spot laser systems, this setup not only makes it possible to independently vary the powers of the two laser beams but also their focal planes, thus facilitating the investigation into the influence of specific energy densities along the beam axis. First investigations show that the weld penetration depth increases with increasing intensities in deeper focal positions until the reduced intensity at the sample surface, due to the deep focal position, is no longer sufficient to form a stable keyhole, causing the penetration depth to drop sharply.

Electron beam welding (EBW) is a fusion joining process particularly suitable for welding titanium plates. In the present work, 2.5 mm thickness Ti6Al4V titanium alloy plates were butt-welded together with backing plates by EBW. The detailed procedures of experiments were used to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints. The optimum welding speed was determined by microstructure examinations, microhardness tests, X-Ray diffraction tests, shear punch tests (SPT) and stress simulation calculations. The results showed that all microstructure of welded metal (WM) was martensite phase under the different welding speeds. In the heat-affected zone (HAZ), the martensite phase gradually evolved to be small and equiaxed. It can be seen that the microstructure of each region in welded joints did not change significantly. When the welding speed is between 8 mm/s and 14 mm/s, it can be seen from the macroscopic appearance of the joints that there was no utterly fused penetration between the butt plate and substrate. Finite element simulation was carried out for the no-penetration depth under different welding conditions, and it was found that the stress suffered by the small no-penetration depth was the smallest. Using different welding parameters shows that the engineering stress in WM was higher than other areas, and BM was the lowest. As welding speed increases from 8 mm/s to 14 mm/s, the variation of microhardness distribution was not evident.

Abstract. The article presents the results of the influence of the technology of obtaining the material of the cathode of the implanter of the Cu – Fe system on the penetration depth of the titanium alloy VT20. It is shown that the use of 50% Cu – 50% Fe material as the material of the cathode of the implanter, obtained by alloying copper and iron, leads to a better increase in the thickness of the ion-doped layer than the use of the cathode obtained by powder metallurgy.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effects of fragment impacts to shaped charge warheads in terms of shaped charge jet formation geometries and penetration performances. Design/methodology/approach In experimental process, a fragment was accelerated to a shaped charge warhead by means of a powder gun to a velocity more than 1,000 m/s, and this impact led to conical damage in the explosive of the warhead. Deformation on the warhead was visualized using X-ray technique to observe holes generated during fragment impact. Penetration test was performed against AISI 1040 steel plates with the damaged shaped charge warhead. Penetration performance of shaped charge jet, which deviated from the symmetry axis, was simulated by using SPEED software with 3-D Eulerian method to validate the numerical modelling method by comparing penetration test and simulation results of damaged warhead. Findings Simulation and test results showed good correlation for the warhead in terms of penetration depth and hole geometry at the impact surface of steel plates. In addition, the effects of the numbers and the geometries of fragment holes on shaped charge jet penetration performances were investigated with validated numerical methods. Simulation results showed that the increase in the number of fragment holes in the explosive of the warhead led to particulation of shaped charge jet that diminished penetration depth in the target plate. Additionally, simulation results also showed that the fragment hole geometry in the explosive after different fragment impact angles affected the amount of jet deviation from the symmetry axis as well as penetration depth in the target plate. Practical implications The results obtained from the current study revealed that fragment impact angle and different number of fragment impact reduced the penetration performance of shaped charge warhead by influencing the symmetry of shaped charge jet negatively. Originality/value The current study fulfils the need to investigate how fragment impact on the shaped charge warhead affect the formation symmetry of shaped charge jet as well as penetration performance by experimental and numerical methods. Penetration performance result of asymmetric jet is compared by experimental and numerical studies. A detailed methodology on numerically modelling of the effect of fragment impact angle and number of fragment impact on shaped charge jet performance is given in this study.
