The focus of this investigation is on reduced order models (ROMs) of the nonlinear geometric response of structures that are built nonintrusively, i.e., from standard outputs of commercial finite element codes. Several structures with atypical loading, boundary conditions, or geometry are considered to not only support the broad applicability of these ROMs but also to exemplify the different steps involved in determining an appropriate basis for the response. This basis is formed here as a combination of linear vibration modes and dual modes, and some of the steps involved follow prior work; others are novel aspects, all of which are covered in significant detail to minimize the expertise needed to develop these ROMs. The comparisons of the static and dynamic responses of these structures predicted by the ROMs and by the underlying finite element models demonstrate the high accuracy that can be achieved with the ROMs, even in the presence of significant nonlinearity.

Introduction: 3D printed trussed titanium interbody cages may deliver bone stimulating mechanobiological strains to cells attached at their surface. The exact size and distribution of these strains may depend on patient-specific factors, but the influence of these factors remains unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to determine patient-specific variations in local strain patterns on the surface of a trussed titanium interbody fusion cage.Materials and Methods: Four patients eligible for spinal fusion surgery with the same cage size were selected from a larger database. For these cases, patient-specific finite element models of the lumbar spine including the same trussed titanium cage were made. Functional dynamics of the non-operated lumbar spinal segments, as well as local cage strains and caudal endplate stresses at the operated segment, were evaluated under physiological extension/flexion movement of the lumbar spine.Results: All patient-specific models revealed physiologically realistic functional dynamics of the operated spine. In all patients, approximately 30% of the total cage surface experienced strain values relevant for preserving bone homeostasis and stimulating bone formation. Mean caudal endplate contact pressures varied up to 10 MPa. Both surface strains and endplate contact pressures varied more between loading conditions than between patients.Conclusions: This study demonstrates the applicability of patient-specific finite element models to quantify the impact of patient-specific factors such as bone density, degenerative state of the spine, and spinal curvature on interbody cage loading. In the future, the same framework might be further developed in order to establish a pipeline for interbody cage design optimizations.

The risk of vibration-induced fatigue in process pipework is usually assessed through vibration measurements. For small-bore pipework, integrity personnel would measure the vibration of the pipework and refer to widely used charts to quantify the risk of vibration-induced fatigue. If the vibration levels are classified as OK, no action is required on behalf of the operators. However, if it is a CONCERN or PROBLEM vibration level, strain measurements are required to adequately quantify the risk through a fatigue life assessment. In this paper, we examine the suitability of a widely used vibration acceptance criteria through finite element models. A total of 4,800 models are used to study the suitability of this vibration acceptance criteria by monitoring both the vibration and dynamic stress. The model comprises a small-bore pipe (2″ SCH 40) that is fitted on a mainline size 5″ SCH 40 using a weldolet; the length of the mainline takes three values resulting in three models. The mainline supporting conditions will be varied using translational and rotational springs. The finite element models will be excited using a point load resembling flow-induced forces (with varying flow velocity and fluid composition). These excitations are obtained from the literature and are based on experimental studies as power spectral density functions. The results show that the studied vibration acceptance criterion is suitable in 99.73% of all the studied models with 68.27% confidence level. For the models with a shorter mainline pipe, the criterial is suitable in 76.5% of the time with 68.27% confidence level.

Topologically interlocking material (TIM) systems are composed of convex polyhedral units placed such that building blocks restrict each other's movement. Here, TIM tubes are considered as rolled monolayers of such assemblies. The deformation response of these assembled tubes under diametrical loading is considered. This investigation employs experiments on additivelymanufactured physical realizations and finite element analysis with contact interactions. The internal load transfer in topologically interlocking tubes is rationalized through inspection of the distribution of minimum principalstress. A thrust-line (TL) model for the deformation of topologically interlocking tubes is established. The model approximates the deformation response of the assembled tubes as the response of a collection of Misestrusses aligned with paths of maximum load transfer in the system. The predictions obtained with the TL-model are in good agreement with results of finite element models. Accounting for sliding between building blocks in theTL-model yields a predicted response more similar to experimental results with additively manufactured tubes.

Abstract Background Stalk lodging (mechanical failure of plant stems during windstorms) leads to global yield losses in cereal crops estimated to range from 5% to 25% annually. The cross-sectional morphology of plant stalks is a key determinant of stalk lodging resistance. However, previously developed techniques for quantifying cross-sectional morphology of plant stalks are relatively low-throughput, expensive and often require specialized equipment and expertise. There is need for a simple and cost-effective technique to quantify plant traits related to stalk lodging resistance in a high-throughput manner. Results A new phenotyping methodology was developed and applied to a range of plant samples including, maize (Zea mays), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), wheat (Triticum aestivum), poison hemlock (Conium maculatum), and Arabidopsis (Arabis thaliana). The major diameter, minor diameter, rind thickness and number of vascular bundles were quantified for each of these plant types. Linear correlation analyses demonstrated strong agreement between the newly developed method and more time-consuming manual techniques (R2 > 0.9). In addition, the new method was used to generate several specimen-specific finite element models of plant stalks. All the models compiled without issue and were successfully imported into finite element software for analysis. All the models demonstrated reasonable and stable solutions when subjected to realistic applied loads. Conclusions A rapid, low-cost, and user-friendly phenotyping methodology was developed to quantify two-dimensional plant cross-sections. The methodology offers reduced sample preparation time and cost as compared to previously developed techniques. The new methodology employs a stereoscope and a semi-automated image processing algorithm. The algorithm can be used to produce specimen-specific, dimensionally accurate computational models (including finite element models) of plant stalks.

Abstract Two types of fatigue cracks at arc notch in steel bridge deck were repaired by drilling stop-holes. The effect of stop-holes with different diameters and positions was considered. Based on finite element models, the variation laws of stress distribution and the effects of stress concentration were compared for different stop-hole diameters and positions. Analysis results indicated that stop-hole can effectively improve the stress concentration at crack tip and the fatigue life of components can be considerably increased. The crack-stopping performance enhances with the increase of stop-hole diameter, but large stop-hole cannot effectively retard crack growth. The stop-hole performs well with the location at -0.5D∼0.5D. The maximum stress point still appears at crack tip when the stop-hole is outside or inside the crack. The stop-hole diameter has no effect on the stop-hole location.
