The temperature dependence of the 15N and 133Cs NMR spin-lattice relaxation times, the 15N spin-spin relaxation time, and the 15N and 133Cs spectra of CsNO2 was observed in the plastic phase (209.2 < T < 673 K (m. p.)) and the low-temperature phase (Phase II). In Phase II we found the NO-2 180°-flip, which could be attributed to the anomalous increase of the heat capacity curve, and determined the activation energy of this motion to be 8.7-11.7 kJ mol-1. The 15N and 133Cs spectra in this phase are inconsistent with the reported crystal structure R3̅m and can be explained by lower crystal symmetry. In the plastic phase we detected a new anionic motion with 11 kJ mol-1 , an isotropic NO-2 reorientation with 8.5-9 kJ mol-1, and ionic self-diffusion with 47 kJ mol-1. The presence of ionic self-diffusion was confirmed by measuring the electrical conductivity.

We have developed a new approach to study the molecular organization of salivary mucus and salivary mucins using confocal fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (confocal-FRAP). MUC5B mucin, its reduced subunit and T-domains were prepared from saliva and fluorescently labelled. The translational self-diffusion coefficients were determined up to 3.6mg/ml by confocal-FRAP. The results suggest that, in solutions of purified MUC5B mucin, at concentrations at which the hydrodynamic domains overlap, the intermolecular interactions are predominantly due to dynamic entanglements, and there was no evidence of specific self-association of MUC5B mucin, or of its subunits, or T-domains. The analysis of the salivary mucus gel also showed no specific interactions with the purified MUC5B components, but it was much less permeable than expected from its MUC5B content. The saliva was completely permeable to microspheres of 207nm diameter, but showed size-dependent effects on the diffusion of larger microspheres (499nm and 711nm diameter). From these analyses the salivary mucus was shown to be both permeable and dynamic, and with the characteristics of a semi-dilute transient network at physiological concentration. Comparison of the results from saliva and purified MUC5B mucin solutions showed that the network properties of saliva were equivalent to a solution of purified MUC5B mucin of 10–20 times higher concentration. This showed that saliva has additional structure and organization not present in the purified MUC5B mucin and suggests there are other interactions and/or components within saliva that combine with MUC5B to produce its complete properties.

23Na NMR studies have been carried out to map the uniform to dimerized phase boundary up to 44.7 T in the NHMFL hybrid. The transition is observed by the splitting of the NMR line ( H //a axis) by the lattice distortion. The field dependence of Tc up to 44.7 T, in agreement with previous magnetization data to 30 T, is very small (α = 0.092) compared to 0.4 for conventional SP systems and shows no deviation within experimental error from the h2 dependence, while optical data show a decrease of the slope in the H-T phase diagram beginning around 40 T. The region of an anomaly near T 33 T and 32 K observed in optical data taken in the long pulse magnet at LANL1 was also explored. The only evidence in the NMR of the observed optical anomaly near 33 T and 32 K was line broadening over a 2 T interval.

In this work, a broad pallete of macroscopically sized samples of ionic liquids was used, in which tensions of about -100 MPa were obtained in preliminary testing methodologies before cavitation would occur. Preliminary NMR studies have been performed on ionic liquids under homogeneous tension. Upon entering into these metastable regimes of negative pressure, it is possible to observe a sharp increase in the anion and cation self-diffusion coefficients as compared to the equilibrium saturated liquid conditions at identical temperatures.
