SUMMARYThe unbiased identification of brain circuits responsible for behavior and their local cellular computations is a challenge for neuroscience. We establish here a hierarchical cross-scale approach from behavioral modeling and fMRI in task-performing mice to cellular network dynamics to identify how reward predictions are represented in the forebrain upon olfactory conditioning. fMRI identified functional segregation in reward prediction and error computations among olfactory cortices and subcortical circuits. Among them, the olfactory tubercle contributed both to dynamic reward predictions and prediction error. In this region, cellular recordings revealed two parallel neuronal populations for prediction coding. One population produced stabilized predictions as distributed stimulus-bound transient network activity; the other evolved during anticipatory waiting and fully reflected predicted value in single-units, dynamically integrating the recent cue-specific history of uncertain outcomes. Thus, the cross-scale approach revealed regional functional differentiation among the distributed forebrain circuits with a limbic hotspot for multiple non-redundant reward prediction coding.

The solvation properties of liquid water originate from the transient network of hydrogen-bonded molecules. In order to probe the coupling between the different modes of this network, nonlinear terahertz (THz) spectroscopy techniques are required. Ideally, these techniques should use a minimal volume and capitalize on sensitive field-resolved detection. Here we performed open aperture z-scan transmission experiments on static liquid cells, and detect the THz fields with electro-optical techniques. We show that it is possible to quantify the nonlinear response of liquid water at ~1 THz even when large signals originate from the sample holder windows.

BAB triblock copolymers prepared by PISA in water self-assemble into a transient network of bridged micelles. The slowdown of the exchange of B blocks between micelles during PISA is highlighted as well as the parameters affecting the polymerization.

Preload has a significant effect on the precision of machine tool spindle, and it changes transiently in different operating conditions. In this paper, the transient feature of spindle preload under multi-factor coupled effect was discussed theoretically and experimentally. By adopting the transient network method and the time-discrete approach, the integrated thermo-mechanical model of a spindle was established. The axial and radial deformations of spindle system, induced by centrifugal force, thermal, and assembly stresses, were all discussed. The effects of the various factors on the transient preload were analyzed, and results show that speed and temperature contribute the most to the transient preload, followed by the bearing deflection. Finally, experimental results indicate the correctness of the improved model.
