In this paper, we study the vibration performance of simply supported slotted plate using structural intensity (SI) method. First, the SI distribution of the slotted plate under given excitation for different slot depths is obtained using finite element methods. The SI streamline of each case shows that the SI distribution can be significantly affected by adjusting the slot depth. The optimal position of dampers which can effectively implement vibration control of slotted plate for the fixed value of exciting frequency can be obtained from the SI streamline distribution. In case of changing vibrating frequencies, a new strategy of vibration control by adding soft material (hydrogel) layers is proposed. The main advantage of this strategy is that the properties of hydrogel can be easily adjusted by changing the chemical potential, thereby achieving the desired vibration control for different excitation conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed vibration control using hydrogel layers is investigated using SI method. The SI distribution and SI streamlines of the slotted plate with the new vibration control show that the proposed strategy is convenient. Our proposed method conceptualizes a new approach toward vibration control using constrained hydrogel layer.

A novel printed monopole antenna employing a slotted-plate, which is electromagnetically coupled to the microstrip-fed planar element, is proposed to provide notch-frequency function. This technique enables stopband characteristics with improved control, compared to placing the slot in the microstrip-fed element. A detailed investigation of the rejectband properties has been made for the UWB antenna. Measured data for the optimized case show the 10 dB return loss bandwidth to be 9.8 GHz (from 2.80 GHz to 12.60 GHz) with a notchband frequency from 5.15 GHz to 5.825 GHz. Propagation measurements indicate that the electromagnetically coupled slot provides a greater reduction in stopband gain for the three principal planes, compared to placing the slot in the fed element. This is desirable to mitigate interference from WLAN systems. A full parametric study of the antenna is presented.

Five selective-black-metal-plate experimental air heaters with and without transpiration were designed, fabricated, and tested to compare their technical merits. All were 61 cm × 61 cm (2ft × 2ft), double-glazed with low-iron glass, and those with transpiration contained an additional Teflon film to form a plenum above the absorber plate. The configurations were (i) a reference collector with flow on back only, (iia) a transpired slotted plate, (iib) a transpired micro-perforated plate, (iii) a corrugated plate with flow on back, and (iv) a transpired slotted corrugated plate. The results show the magnitude of technical improvement that can be obtained through the slotting, perforating, and corrugating strategems.

With the highlight of less regards to insulation measures and the key factor of the flow rates, slotted-plate solar collectors possess rather lower thickness and lighter mass, higher heat production, and better matching with various buildings compared with the common plate solar collectors. Results show that a much higher instantaneous efficiency could be obtained by increasing the flow rates suitably in a low-temperature working environment. The average efficiency could reach up to 51% with the maximum instantaneous efficiency of 61%. Based on the analysis of the relation between instantaneous efficiency and flow rates or the relation between instantaneous efficiency and the temperature difference of the inlet and the outlet water, a experiential formula for the optimal flow rate is proposed to improve the heating-up rates and working efficiency. The performances investigation of slotted-plate solar collectors would pave a way for their widespread and positive applications in the near future.
