From modest beginnings Sydney became an extraordinarily influential and accomplished molecular biologist. His critical knowledge of, and insights into, key scientific problems were legendary. His irrepressible personality, acerbic wit and ebullient talks inspired a generation of young biologists. He made seminal discoveries in how genetic information is used for protein synthesis, and established Caenorhabditis elegans as one of the foremost model organisms for the study of development and neural function. He also pioneered techniques for genome analysis and was instrumental in establishing several outstanding centres of biological research around the world.

The replication of DNA is the process by means of which genetic information is passed from one generation to the next in all living organisms. It is widely believed that a similar process must have become important early in the development of life on the Earth, either before or at the same time as the evolution of protein synthesis. The evolution of any life-form based on familiar chemistry would seem to require the early appearance of some type of residue-by-residue replication, although it might be very different in detail from the one we know.

Living organisms are the most complex, interesting and significant objects regarding all substructures of the universe. Life science is regarded as a science of the 21st century and one can expect great new discoveries in the near futures. This article contains an introductory brief review of genetic information, its coding and translation of genes to proteins through the genetic code. Some theoretical approaches to the modelling of the genetic code are presented. In particular, connection of the genetic code with number theory is considered and the role of p-adic numbers is underlined.
